View Full Version : REVISION PREORDERS
Revision preorders go on sale 03.05.05 at 12:01 am at Key20direct.com. There will be links posted on this site.
Revision preorder sales end 04.05.05.
You've got one month to get in early.
Benefits of preordering:
• You'll get your copy first. After orders end, we'll take the Rev to a big local con. We'll start selling copies, counting from the last preorder. After that -- in the following two weeks -- we'll make the game available to retailers and ship the preorders. After THAT regular orders will be up (sometime at the end of April.)
• Numbers you say? We're going to try to number all 1500 copies of the first printing. Preorders will be assigned a number. Preorder numbers will be much lower in the iterations than what will be available on the site or through stores. No promises, but we'll make every effort to make numbers that are below 100 available through preorder. I have a lot of promises to keep on that one, but I'll try. At the very least, preorder numbers will start with #100 and go from there.
• Signed and inscribed. I am going to make every effort to sign and inscribe all preordered copies. Other copies -- 100 post-preorders -- will just be signed. Other than preorders, no other copies ordered through the website will be inscribed. It's not exactly how I'd like it, but that's the way it's going to be. So if you'd like your copy personally inscribed by me, order a preorder. Also, I'll probably have Dro sign the first 25 or so with me. After that he's got to get back to work! ::cracks whip::
So there they are. My three reasons for you to preorder BW. The overarching idea: Your order will get personal attention and a note from yours truly. After that month, I am going to be too busy writing new material, hitting cons and salvaging my personal life to able to personally fulfill orders.
Good luck!
May your fire ever burn brightly.

That can be arranged. You'll have to explicitly note that in your order and put my address as the shipping address. However, you can get them a couple of weeks before May 5th if you preorder.

Eh, what? I always get confused by the US date format and have to look it up. 050505 wasn't problematic, but 030505 was. For a minute I thought it meant 3rd of May 05, but then I got it. May ISO strike you down! Anyway, I'm in for an early morning on Saturday. At 06:00 I'll be hitting the refresh button like crazy until a link appears.

I shouldn't answer in Luke's place, but since he wrote that we've got one month to get in early then it must be the 5th of March that sales begin and 5th of April that sales end. Otherwise there'd be no way to get the stuff delivered to customers before the release party and Luke has said that those who preorder ought to get their books by the end of April.

Saturday is March 5th which is when the preorder will start (030505, or 2005-03-05) and it'll be open until 5th of April (040505, or 2005-04-05). Not 3rd, but 5th of March. This means you and I can get up at 6 in the morning (since we're six hours ahead of the US east coast) and watch as the preorder opens. Midnight in NYC is 06:00 for us.

Pre-orders will be available for a month, so I don't think you're going to miss it.
Just to be clear, though, I assumed Luke meant that the preorder period runs from March 5 to April 5. (Just speaking as a Canadian who is also used to DD/MM/YY format).

Sorry for asking this, but...
Are there any distadvantages for pre ordering?
Maybe errors that will be found in the first print will be fixed on the second print?

Unless the thing sells like crazy, I wouldn't expect a second printing for at least a year.
Kevin

Never wait for the second printing of an RPG. Most RPGs will never have one.
Note that none of the following is meant to apply to Luke--I have no idea what his business plan is. This is based on my direct experience of working on RPGs and what I've heard from a number of my friends who work on RPGs as a full-time job. The RPG business is a lot smaller and a lot less lucrative than a lot of gamers seem to think.
At the top end is WotC--they sell, on average, 25-50K of a D&D book. Next is WW. Before the WoD reboot, Vampire products sold about 6-8K, Werewolf and Mage about half that (I have no info on the post-reboot sales).
Most gaming companies, however, sell around 2,000 copies of a typical gaming product. A new game usually does better than supplements for an existing game. The rule of thumb is that you will sell about twice as many copies of the core rules as you will of a supplement, so if you need to sell 2K on the supplements, you should sell at least 4K of the core rules.
This is the level at which most of the RPG companies you've heard of operate. A massive hit for these companies is a book that sells close to 10,000 copies (a company with 20 or so books coming out every year will be delighted if one sells at that rate--there are only a few successes of that level in the gaming market annually).
Some games sell even less than that. There are about 1,000 game stores in North America, so basically what I'm saying is that the average product should sell two copies per store.
So why no reprints? Well, most of the sales a company will get on a product occur within 90 days of its release. After that point, you want to have gone through around 70-80% of your print run, because the remaining copies are likely to take years to clear.
Becuase of the slow sales that occur on reprints (again, except for really popular products), and because it's most economical to produce as large a print run as you can afford, companies have to estimate their likely sales on a book and produce that many. Occasionally this creates a problem if a book does better than expected, but a miscalculation the other way can drive a company out of business.
Financially, it's generally much better to produce a revised edition of a game than it is a reprint. Why? Well, a revised version of a game is reasonably likely to sell to a large portion of the people who bought the original. Printing costs, the largest portion of the expense, are the same for a revision as they are for a reprint. The only cost for the revision is the additional writing and art required, but you can sell another 2000 copies (as opposed to the 2-300 you might sell in the same time of a reprint) so the profit margin is much better.
That's why there are so many "revised editions" within a couple of years of the original.
EDIT: In case it's not clear enough, I don't believe that this was the motivation for producing BW Revised--there were so many fixes and improvements on this site that it was pretty hard to work with the original and patch it.

So as already pointed out the "In Brief" sections are very helpful, overall I'd say the organization and layout of the revision is much easier to understand. The clarified section on advancement is the most impressive to me as I always had a problem with figuring those out. Another thing that stands out n my mind (that doesn't differ from Classic) is the writing style. Luke's writing is very personal and that means something to me, I enjoy reading the books because I feel like he could be sitting there talking to me. I got to the point in the Burning Wheel where it says go read the Character burner so I did and got up to the end of the lifepaths. So far Bravo!

Well, the suspense is finally starting to get to me. I took my trash out this morning, went over to check my mail, and low and behold, there's a package!!!
...it's from Amazon? That's not what I wanted!

"Good" doesn't really enter into it! They're SHATNER!! He's his own genre; he can't be measured by any yardstick other than his own. Kind of like Tom Jones, except even cheesier.

Because it's been requested, I will read off my non-BW package shipment:
Golden Throats: The Great Celebrity Sing Off
Fear of Pop: Vol. 1
Transformed Man
...
All three feature Mr. Shatner in at least one song.

Thanks but no, I don't want to be entirely distracted.
As it is, MArio and JEvon are going to accuse me of being ready to ditch this game in a heartbeat for BW. I don't want to drive that illusion home any more than it already exists.

Set number 67 reached today! Israel. :D
For some kind of reason they brought me the package to the door with a messenger (that was worth the 12$).
I was a bit suprised when I saw the size of the package.
The art work inside the book is great, but I must be honest and say it is less comfortable that the books are smaller with small font, unlike most of the other RPG books. Perhaps that is part of the reason for the books being so cheap.
Anway, pesach holiday is not over yet, but I need to study for mid term tests in boring things like electricity and apllied math so I wont have time to read it.
Thanks luke!

Okay, I am rip-roarin' pissed now.
You're welcome, Ofer.
but I must be honest and say it is less comfortable that the books are smaller with small font, unlike most of the other RPG books. Perhaps that is part of the reason for the books being so cheap.
btw, the books are "small" primarily to make them MORE READABLE. A bigger book is not necessarily more readable. With a smaller page size, I can divide the information easily into digestable chunks and better direct the eye.
and the font ain't any smaller than what's common in rpgs today.

ps I'm a font/layout addict.

You are right, the font is the same size.
The advantage of a larger book is that you can leave it open and dont have to hold it open with your hands, but that is just being a bit petty.
I think I will manage nevertheless.

I just found out I've been CURSED BY THE USPS!! When Key20 took my stuff to their office they were told that Economy Mail was the only viable option (for a reasonable amount of $) and so it will not arrive until May 28th. Which SUCKS!!! They ought to have known that two GPM flat rate envelopes would have been as cheap and MUCH faster than the option they presented. Damn you USPS!!!! I certainly don't blame Key20 for this -- it's all USPS' fault. It seems they, like their Swedish counterparts often don't know what service options they have avaliable and how to best use them. Words cannot describe my anger.

Yeah. If I had been able to choose, I would easily have paid the additional $9 for another GPM envelope. But as Thor said, at least I'll have two and the second set ought to arrive within a week.

Oh. My. God.
This is unconscionable. Jocke, if you want I'll refund your money for the preorder. Same goes for you, Kaare. I knew something was wrong. Key20 was SPECIFICALLY FUCKING INSTRUCTED to send them Global Priority.

Shipping overseas from the US is a major pain, unless the place you're shipping to is one of the UK, Australia, or Germany. I've sent stuff to France and Australia at the same time, and the Aussie got his stuff weeks before the French guy did.

Jason said that USPS claimed my package could not be send via GPM due to weight and destination. Since I only paid $12.50 for the delivery he didn't want to pay another $30 for the airmail (understandable) and so chose the Economy Mail option. My order didn't just consist of BWR, I had also ordered Sorcerer to ship with it. Weight can't be a consideration since BWR weighs 1.16 lbs according to Key20's order page and I doubt Sorcerer pushes the total over the 4lb limit to the flat rate envelopes. And if it for some reason couldn't fit in their large flat rate envelope, why not send two flat rate envelopes? That would cost $18 for both deliveries. If the USPS claims the destination (Sweden) makes GPM unavaliable they should check their own website since it specifically says that the Global Priority Mail, flat rate envelope, is avaliable for shipments to me. And I've received lots of stuff via GPM from the US before. HERO 5th being one of them and that's one large book. There's also the Direct Sack option which is only allowed to carry printed matter. I don't know how large the sacks are but for $27 you can ship 11 lbs via airmail to Sweden. I don't know what was going on at USPS in Ohio (that's where Key20 is right?) but they didn't pass many Freight-wise tests, I can tell you that much.
As for refunds, no thanks. The one arriving on the 28th is signed by you Luke and I would never return that one. Nevah!!! :) I wanted two sets from the beginning anyway but chose to wait until I had rebuilt my finances a bit (I'm really, really bad at holding on to the few bucks I've got). Having to buy one ahead of schedule isn't that bad. Also, I wasn't forced to order the second set or anything I'm just very impatient. I usually know the exact minute my local post office gets my parcels since I'm tracking them online and I never wait for the "you've got a package" slip to arrive. I run down with the item number and claim my goods within an hour of arrival.
