Hello, I am new here.
I would like to ask about combat mechanics.
Does in combat a PC can choose attacking a certain zone of the enemy? such as hands, head torso legs?

In the revised:

The defender presents a zone, the attacker pays successe to change zone.

In the old Called shots had an obstacle penalty.

There are only 4 areas: Head, Chest/Torso, Arms, and Legs. In melee, the defender declares which area is "on offer."

For instance, I'm keeping my hands high to protect my head and chest, so my legs are vulnerable.

However, the attacker has had a few successful hits to the defender's arms previously in the combat. He hasn't been able to get through the defender's armor, but he has damaged that armor. He spends one success from his successful attack to move the attack from the defender's legs to the defender's arms.

How does the battle mechanices handles a combat of a person against a wolf for example?
Does the wolf have also zones? what zones does the wolf have?

Zones are only relevant if the person/monster has varying armor protection on different body parts. The severity of the wound is determined by how many successes the attacker gets over what he had to hit, once defensive rolls and armor are taken into account.

Hi trial,

Detailed martial conflict with a wolf versus a man plays out similarly to any other. Same mechanics are used all around. The main difference, a Great Wolf has traits and skills that give him advantages in certain situations. His Crushing Jaws, for example, allow him to perform a Lock and Bite on the same action. Whereas a man will rely on his weapons and armor to see him through.

In the scripted melee mechanics, a Wolf player will choose very different tactics than that of a man. Dashing in and out, avoiding a lot, trying to create an opening so he can go for the throat and take his opponent down in one shot.

A player taking the role of the man in this fight has a lot options available to him, but he'll probably want to play pretty aggressive -- maintaining his distance from the wolf while throwing a lot of strikes to keep the wolf at bay.

does that help?

In the case of a person, its important to know which zone he is being attacked not only because of the armor but also because of what sort of effects the damage have.
For instance if the person is hit in the hand, he will have harder time of using his weapon.
If he is hit in the legs he will have harder time to move, does these kind of things are taken into account in the wheel?

Nope.

But that's not to say that there are no wound effects- it's simply that ANY wound will affect how easy it is for you to do anything- because wounds make you subtract dice from your attributes and skills. If you take a wound that gives you a -1D penalty, that will affect both your Speed, and your chances to hit. It's just that there's no ADDITIONAL detriment to taking a wound to a certain part of the body.

It really does make sense. Someone bleeding profusely from their arm is not going to be able to run as fast as an uninjured person- first of all, there's the pain, plus blood loss will make you lightheaded, plus you won't be able to put all your attention on running, as you will most likely be trying to staunch the flow of blood from your wound. Conversely, a leg wound WILL make it harder for you to fight effectively, as you won't be able to put as much weight on that wounded leg, and will have to adjust your fighting style to compensate.

I think one of the things Luke is trying to get across (and I could be wrong), is that you fight with your whole body. Your arms are not these autonomous flailing things acting on their own, nor are your legs just the things you use to get around; they're all part of a cohesive whole, and you can't damage one of those parts without affecting the entire being.

I made up these totally awshum location-specific steel results from taking a wound. I offered them to Abzu and he totally didn't take to them at all.

If by "totally didn't take them at all" you mean "he included them in the Revision" then you are correct. Otherwise, this statement is false.

What if a limb is being cut off? you definitly cant use your sword when the hand holding it has been cut off, but you can still run.
And you definitly cant run if your leg has been cut off, and probabbly cant fight either. Would a hand being cut off be represented by a wound of a certain level and a leg being cut off will be represented by a greater level of the wound since you loose more functionality?

Hi Trial,

How'd you hear about Burning Wheel? Have you played with us at any of our con demos? If you haven't, do you go to cons? I'd love to show you how it works in person -- a fight in Burning Wheel is about as desperate and bloody as they come.

I'll be at Ubercon in Secaucus, NJ, ICON in Stony Brook, NY, Origins in Columbus, OH, Dexcon in NJ and GenCon in Indiapolis, IN. At each con I spend all day Saturday demoing the melee system. More than one player has walked away from those demos limping...

To answer your question, BW uses wound tolerances to reflect damage to a character's body. There are 6 tolerances, each more nasty and debilitating than the last. Every time a character is struck, we look to see which wound tolerance was met by the hit, then we subtract the relevant penalties from his die pools. Die pools range from 1-4 dice for normal folks like you and me. Getting your hand cut off is -3D, getting an arm cut off is -4D. Once one of your die pools/stats drops to zero, you pass out.

Pretty simple, eh?

-L

PS How about I cut off your hand and see if you still want to fight and run?

"Baby, you must have a massive threat range, because I've got a natural 9 in my pants and I'm ready to crit."
