I just wanted to take a minute and tell those of you who were not at PAX this past weekend that you missed out on some really great stuff.
I learned about Burning Wheel at last years PAX, during the Beyond Dungeons and Dragons Panel, which opened my eyes to many interesting new systems and ways of playing table-top RPGs. Naturally, I bought my own copy of the BW core and spent the last year having a great time with it.
I was very pleased to see how much support and attention Luke, Jared, Vince, and all the other indie designers recieved this year. The panels were excellent (Game Design is Mind Control was very solid stuff, and helped one of my friends really get what is going on with the assumptions behind Burning Wheel). I was also able to finally grab Burning Empires to round out my collection. Three of my friends got to run the Sword with Luke, and I think that they have been solidly hooked.
I also enjoyed getting a chance to meet several of the folks from BWHQ and the forums as I stopped by the booth during the course of the weekend. I didn't get a ton of time to talk with them, because they were hip-deep in people wanting to play demos and buy books. As the weekend progressed, I am fairly certain that there was at least three demos running concurrently, and the line at the booth just kept getting longer.
Because the venue was bigger this year, it was possible to have a section devoted to rpg, card, and board games, and it did my heart good to see how well the indie section seemed to be doing. Dread, Freemarket, and Apocalypse World were just some of the many games being demoed in addition to Mouseguard and Burning Wheel. It was really very exciting to watch people realize that there are other ways and approaches to gaming, and see them really get into the games.
So, a big thanks to Luke, Thor, Dro, Iskander, Jared Sorensen, the Geek Nights guys, and anyone I may have missed. You all worked hard, and I really think you pulled off a great win for the Burning Wheel. Log a challenging Conspicuous test for advancement, and take a persona point for workhorse.
