So I want some codified rules for Martial Arts, I don't know exactly what's out there. I'm sure that other people have had some ideas, I figured we could pool our resources and come up with something... So this is a brainstorming session, please jump right in.

First thing's first. I think that Martial Arts are fun when they have starting moves. My current thinking is that you get some number of starting moves by Ob. Like, maybe you get 5 Ob worth of moves to be split as you wish: 2 Ob2's and an Ob1 or whatever.

Additionally you can impose limits on your MA to get something. Limits like "No Aggressive Stance" from Kimdo. Currently I'm thinking you can either get extra starting maneuvers or concessions on later moves (perhaps -1 Ob?).

Here's some (very) tentative ideas for Obstacles.

If it allows you to use your skill instead of what would normally be rolled, +1 Ob per action. So if you get to Lock with skill and get skill as your ND against Locks, that's Ob2. If you look at The Dance, you'll notice that there's a move that lets you use skill for positioning. That is replacing Close, Maintain, Withdraw, and Charge. Four things, Ob4.

If it does something that the MA has already done (i.e. +1 Power to unarmed strikes) +2Ob to do it again.

Now, a couple of things: FoRKing your MA into other things (Tai Chi into Field Dressing)... half an Ob per Skill it FoRKs into?

Combining two moves into one. There are three major types of this: Divide dice (like a Counterstrike), divide successes (like Recoiling Strike), and apply to both (cheating Push-Kick). Suggestions for Obs there?

And disadvantages lower Ob, of course! Hesitation (Charge), Trigger conditions (Counterstrike), etc... I'm not really sure what all works here. What else have we got, and what is it worth?

Discuss!

My first thought was about your limits=bonuses. Frack that! Limits are limits and in the BW philosophy, they shouldn't give you any bonuses.

Somewhere else, someone broke down the MA's into a really good Obstacle system. I wonder where that thread is?
