Someone requested a chat box on the forum in this thread (http://www.burningwheel.org/forum/showthread.php?10759-chat-box). It was intimated that we should just use IRC instead. There isn't an official one, so I went ahead and set one up.

The wiki has everything you need to get started. (http://www.burningwheel.org/wiki/index.php?title=Burning_Wheel_IRC#Quickstart)

Welcome back to 1995.

IRC is a great community tool, and setup is dead simple with X-Chat 2 (http://www.silverex.org/download/), mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) or whatever your preferred flavor of client may be. Chat about your Burning issues (ba-dum tish) in real time!

Nice! I got onto it and it looks good. i had no idea what irc even was, but it looks good! Now people just have to get onto it, right? :)

on second thought, I might have no idea what I'm doing...

Yep I have no idea what I'm doing. Don't know how to make it work.

Mirado, what IRC client are you using? We can walk you throw the setup.

chatzilla. Seemed like the best option.

Chatzilla's not one I'm very familiar with, but let's give this a try. Open a Firefox tab and select Tools --> ChatZilla. In the bar, enter /attach irc.synirc.net to connect to the server. If that works, then enter /join #BurningWheel to enter the room. If any of those things fail, let us know with a description of the error.

Got it! That's sweet. New asset to the forum!

Here's a couple of links that may help people get directly to the room

Real men use irssi... and by real men I mean crazy linux people.

There seems to be a lot of people using Mibbit for their IRC client. Nothing wrong with that per se, but unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise I'd suggest using a non-browser-based client and leaving it up. There's a positive feedback psychology to IRC channels: the more people who are logged in, the more people will stay logged in and be ready to participate in whatever comes up. Idling is a grand old tradition on IRC, and it's expected that people will stay logged in to the room even when they're not at the keyboard for an extended period.

A few of the 3rd party IM apps also have IRC support - notably Adium, Trillian, and Pidgin.

I regret that my family situation does lend itself well to IRC.

I'm defaulting to mibbit for now because the Trillian 5 implementation of IRC is fucked. I'll figure something out.

I'm using mibbit because a browser-based client is all I can use on my work laptop.

Well rats...I love my Trillian! :-(

Well...I seem to have connected to the channel via my Trillian Pro 3 software. I can see some folks in there and I've written to it, but haven't heard back. Anyway, i'll leave my window up if anyone wants to say hey (and let me know if it's working or not) :)

It's working and we've been chatting about Paul's awesome BW game, Robocop, and playing nicely with others. Come on by, folks!

Just a quick note to mention that the IRC now has a simple bot called burningbot to help with dice rolling, recalling trivia, making sandwiches etc.

The bot is very new so its features are quite simple. More will be added in the future.

dice:
Anything that looks like a shade and a exponent at the start of a line is treated as a dice expression and burningbot will respond with an appropriate roll. eg, enter 'b4' to roll four black dice, 'g6' for 6 gray dice.

If you want to explode any sixes in your roll, sent ''boom'' and burningbot will add the new dice to your last roll. There is no support for re-rolling traitors at present.

If you you know your dice are open ended before you need to roll, add a '*' after the exponent eg: 'b4*'.

In addition to this, you can roll vs an obstacle or another dice pool. to do this add ' vs ob' or ' vs die' eg 'b5 vs ob3' or 'b4* vs b4' etc after your initial dice pool.

recalling facts:
burningbot stores a number of miscellaneous facts and will recall them verbatium when it sees a key it recognises at the start of a message. eg 'ugt?' will result in it showing you where to find out about Universal Greeting Time.

Currently only a handleful of priviledged users are able to teach or erase facts. This may open up in the future.

forum links:
If you past a forum link into the chat burningbot will scrap the title and any related tags. Currently this only works for thread pages. In the future this might expand to more sophisticated scrapping. Only the bw forums are supported at present.

dev back-channel:
If you want to mess about with the bot, he supports private messaging and also lurks in his own development backchannel #burningbot. Use this rather than spamming the channel if there is real conversation going on.

This bot is ridiculous. Hours of fun all by itself.

I love it when a plan comes together.
