[edited 5/8/05: An interesting house rule, although I should see how the revised edition handles it first. I didn't realize it was so close to available when I wrote this, and I didn't want to delete the entire post.]
My thought is that the following would apply to grey and white shade weapons skills. With grey and white speeds giving additional actions per round, maybe +1 per volley grey and +2 per volley white. I think doubling the number of actions may be a bit extreme. Maybe not though.
And maybe this is more appropriate for grey/white speed than skill, or maybe requires both speed and skill. In any case...
Here's an idea that would add some flair to herioc and super natural weapons skill. If the character has the appropriate weapon type for that skill, there scripting options differ. The following may be over powered, I'd like to hear your input, but it would allow for the mechanics of the game to allow for Aragorn, grey shaded, to slice up lots of mundane orcs as long as he doesn't get overwhelmed.

Black: As rules currently stand in the classic edition. Forfeit an action to change another in the future. This can be done any number of times.

Grey: As above, but gets one action change for free, per exchange, in the future. Afterwards they have to pay for them, but one forfeited option changes two others. At one forfeit per action they can switch one action to another, in the current volley, after actions are revealed. (makes it really hard for mundane characters to beat them solely through lucky scripting. )

White: Gets three free action changes. One of these may be used on the current volley, after actions are revealed. Afterwards they must be paid for. One action forfeited buys three actions changed in the future, or two action changes in the current volley, after actions are revealed.

I'm imaging Achilles and Hector slashing at eachother, their blades a blur as actions change and re-change faster than most human eyes can follow. Finally Achilles gets one action up a Hector takes a wound. Once slowed, more and more attacks get through. It's only a matter of time before he's tied to the chariot.

Or Aragorn changing his script to counter the most recent Orc attack. And as long as they come at him one at a time, he'll keep dispatching them, one at a time. They aren't real dangerous until he can't afford to waste actions countering everything.

What do you think?

I'm not sure what you're talking about with the beginning, but giving characters with a higher shade free forfieting seems liks a good idea. I would just make white have 2 free, not 3, 2 changes for one later on. I don't know how overpowered it would be though. It would have to be playtested.
