Friends,

I just talked to Vincent Baker. We're going to team up this fall -- 11 11 11 -- to bring you the BURNING APOCALYPSE con: a weekend packed with Burning Wheel, Apocalypse World, Mouse Guard, Dogs in the Vineyard and more!

11 11 11 (12 and 13) in NYC.
Save the date!

Location to be announced.

I am very excited!

As far as 11-11-11 ApocaWheelCon, very very doubtful I could make it. Unless you decide to have it in balmy Ottawa...? Mebe?

Right now I'm imagining a party hosted/curated by Jared Sorensen -- music and games -- on Friday night.

At said party on Friday night Vincent and Luke co-deliver keynote address. We can't do it Sat morning because the space is only available until 11 and so it fucks up the time slots.

Saturday from 9-1, 2-6, 7-11 we have three slots of full games, with some scheme to encourage people to play in games they otherwise would not.

Sunday we have two slots 9-1 and 2-6. Then an afterparty dinner (not at my house!).

Everyone who attends must run an event.
All VB and LC games will be eligible, but AW and BW will be encouraged.
Registration will be $50ish like last year.

I'm super excited!

I will do my damnedest to make this.

How will the "everybody runs something" work? Won't there be more people than slots in which to run?

luke
08-20-2011, 09:55 PM
Trust me. When you have 100 people to entertain every four hours, you need all hands on deck.

5 game slots throughout Saturday and Sunday. 20 groups of five players. That's 100 events over the weekend, thus everyone has to run an event. This worked great last year.
I think I will borrow from Fastaval this year and publish the events/scenarios in a book afterwards.

Zelbinian
08-20-2011, 11:11 PM
I'll happily run both AW and BWG. I don't mind spending most of my time running, actually, as long as I get to be a player for each of those at least once during the con.

It would so verily rock if this included extra night options. I don't mean you setting up the room block for extra day(s), I just mean a little help for people trying to find others that are going to be there an extra night, for whatever reason. I did last year, because I'd hauled my butt so far anyway, and was happy enough with the results that I plan to again.

For those looking for places to stay in New York, I can't recommend airbnb.com (http://www.airbnb.com/) enough. It's a website where you can hookup with regular people willing to rent out a room in their apartment or house. LOADS of cheap options, and you'll meet some of the nicest people in the world. I stayed at a great place in Williamsburg last New Year's. Way more fun than just hotelling it by yourself, and much cleaner and safer than a hostel.

Just thought I'd put that out there. Also note that it's not couch surfing, or room sharing. You have to pay. But the prices are cheaper than hotels, and I've found it just feels safer and usually much cleaner than room sharing with random strangers.

I am ready to go with the schedule but for six events. Unfortunately, email and twitter have failed me. Subtle hints have gone ignored. It's time to name names. Time is of the essence!
Sean Smeland has not informed me how many players he can take in his BW game.
Joshua Crowe has not informed me how many players he can take in his BW game.

If you have already given me this info, I apologize for being an absent-minded and overwhelmed game designer, but please resubmit.
If you would like to see the schedule, bug your friends to get me their info! Final schedule is ready to go except for this info!

And if you're running a Dogs or AW game, please consider submitting an event description. Vincent submitted one so you should too.

The east village has some of the best (and last) cheap food in Manhattan.

St. Mark's Place and E. 9th St. have a ton of Japanese restaurants. There are also several Ukranian Restaurants and almost anything else one could look for, and it can get overwhelming.

Cheap & Eats:

Mamoun's Falafel
22 St Marks Pl
(between 3rd Ave & Astor Pl)
Cheap! Good. Fast. No delivery. But it's a 3 minute walk from 440.

East Village Thai
32 E 7th St
(between Taras Shevchenko Pl & 2nd Ave)
Thai food. Small (no seating). BWHQ favorite. Closed Sundays.

Mark
33 St Marks Pl
(between 3rd Ave & Astor Pl)
Meat Burgers. Beers. Shakes. Sometimes adorable hipster workers.

Bare Burger
(LaGuardia Pl. & Bleecker)
A BWHQ favorite (the Astoria branch at least). Crazy burgers and shakes.

"World Famous" Ray's Pizza
(3rd Ave and St. Mark's Place)
It's pizza. They deliver.

Chains:
Chipotle (St. Marks between 3rd and Astor Place)
Pommes Frites (french fry madness) (123 2nd Ave between 7th and St. Marks)
St. Alp's Teahouse (bubble tea - do people still drink that?) (3rd Ave between 9th and Bowery)
'Wichcraft (pressed sandwiches) (E. 8th St. between Greene and University)
Probably a bunch of other places like McDonalds on 3rd Ave.

Diners (for post gaming / pre gaming eat outs or breakfasts):
Veselka (Corner of 9th St and 2nd Ave)
Stage (2nd Ave between St. Marks and 7th)

Coffee:
There are like 100 Starbucks (including a few doors away from 440 studios, at Astor Pl and Lafayette).

If you are a coffee snob, the East Village has the following fine coffee shops.

Think Coffee
730 Broadway (around the corner, between Waverly & Washington Place - inside NYU bookstore)

Abraco
86 E. 7th St
(between 2nd and 1st Ave)

Porto Rico Importing Co
40 1/2 St. Marks Place (near 2nd Ave)

MUD
307 E 9th St (between 2nd Ave & 1st Ave)

Slightly further afield is Joe the Art of Coffee, which I think is some of the best coffee in the city.

Two nearby locations:
141 Waverly Place, between 6th avenue and 7th avenue

9 E13th Street between 5th ave and University Place

Due to a rash of last minute cancellations we are short on seats for the first slot (A) on Saturday morning. I'd like to be to say I'll step in and take the extra players, but I'll probably be running about putting out fires.

I might be able to run an extra slot if you let me know.

Another first slot cancellation. Things are getting interesting now.

But you know who has stepped up? Seb Baker. That's right, Vincent's son. He's going to run his game, Blasters for Hire, for anyone who has the mettle!

That was fantastic. Everyone I met was nice, the games were fun, and I bought one of everything. Not bad for my first convention!

Highlights: playing Freemarket, playing my first actual burning wheel game, Mike's victorian MG hack, meeting Luke, Thor, Jenn, Scott, Tresi, Kitty, et al. Letdown: Not enough people to run my Mouseguard game!

Thanks to everyone, and see you at the next one!

I had a great time as well. It's hard to pick any one thing as a highlight, since there were so many great moments. I did really enjoy actually getting to play Burning Wheel for the first time (thanks, Alan!), getting to solve grisly murders as a guardmouse by gaslight, running a Mouse Guard game that ended in both a TPK and successful mission (thank you, players of the valiant mice of the Marinus Muris!), watching Luke smack-talk every deity he encountered on his way to the Stairway to Heaven, and mousing it up some more with a weasel pirate beat-down as a finale.

I played:

"Zombie University," Burning Wheel, run by Kitty Engleman
"Gaslight & Ghouls," Mouse Guard, run by Michael S. Miller
"The City of Panax," Burning Wheel, run by Anthony
"Dungeoneers & Dragonslayers," run by Luke
...and of course I ran my BW event.

I had a great time indulging in my favorite RPGs and meeting a lot of great people, and I look forward to the next one. Just this one event has made me feel an order of magnitude more proficient at BW and MG.

Just a thought...

The priority table in the con book was a little confusing. I bumped into a few people, including Thor, who, when asked what their priority for a given event slot was, would answer something like, "I'm priority B," which is all wrong, of course.

I'd suggest that the rows be the priorities (First, Second, etc.) and the columns be the event slots (A, B, C, etc.). That way, each column becomes a list, in proper order, of the priority for that event slot, from first to last. That would have been super-useful when jostling for tables.
