I'm still very new to The Burning Wheel and to this forum, but lately I've had some free time at work so I started playing around with the probabilities of BW's dice convention on Excel. It occurred to me after finding the odds for the Black, Grey, and White shades that nothing changes, in the way of odds for the Black shade if you switch to using d10 with a DN of 6 (50% is still 50% regardless of the number of sides a dice has). On top of that, the differences in probabilities go down between shades. You could even increase the number of shades: Beginner (DN = 7), Master (DN = 5), Heroic (DN = 4), Legiondary (DN = 3), and Supernatural (DN = 2).
These are just some ideas I've had, and I don't mean to get anyone defensive about the current rules. I really do think they're great, but I have a ton of red and white d10 from playing The Riddle of Steel that I don't want to get rid of.
It is perfectly acceptable to play BW with whatever dice you want to. D10 is just fine!
In case some of you missed my dice madness, you can check out guidelines for using non-d6 in BW here:

I was trying to find what you had written there before I wrote my post, but I was looking in the wrong forum.
Being as new to the forum as I am, I'm a little shy about starting new topics, so I posted my comments in the "Grey Shades in Play" (http://burningwheel.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=102) topic since some of the people posting there thought that the difference between shades was a bit too high, but this new topic is fine.

That is one of the beautiful things with altering systems to only rarely playing with the DN. You can use just about any die you like.
d4 are tough due to the sparse variation
otherwise...
d20 - 11 or better, 7 gray, 4 white
d12 - 7 or better, 5 gray, 4 white
d10 - 6 or better, 4 gray, 3 white
d8 - 5 or better, 4 gray, 3 white
d6 - 4 or better , 3 gray, 2 white
in fact...LOL... check it out...
- get a shit load of different dice
- paint the above sides appropriately
- no more numbers, now you count any other colors but black, gray and white as traitors
of course my suggestion would doing this with dice other than black, gray or white dice :D
I think I am going to make some new dice without numbers (except DOF)

I think I might just try to get shitloads of small red dice and paint the sides.

This is one area where I think Shadowrun failed in a major way. I feel that they manipulated DN's way too much to far too freaky effect - and why I have been in the "don't shift DN at all" camp. For DN shifting I think a larger die is neccessary.
However, before discovering BW I had been looking for a good system to run my games in and my leanings were toward DP9's Silouette System. They go in a different direction than BW.
Synopsis: skill is die pool and stat is a modifier to the die pool. Roll result calculated by taking the highest of the dice rolled and additional sixes above the first add one to the value of the highest die (a six, no doubt). Thus its all about the DN but with a better curve, in my opinion). Its a really slick system and I encourage folks to check it out. Alas, BW pulled me away from Silouette, especially due to scripting.
