I have an idea for an event I'd like to run at 11 11 11. I welcome comments and suggestions.
The core idea is a medieval tournament that I would be running all day on Saturday.
I'm picturing two brackets: squires and knights.
I'd post some pretty tight character burning rules. Players could burn up a character before hand or onsite. You could register your character for the tournament ahead of time or onsite. If you register ahead of time your character's name would be printed out nicely on the scoreboard, otherwise you're a late arrival write-in.
There would be a list of competitions. Each competition you enter you'd have a chance at earning some points in the tournament. For the most part the competitions would be really tight and fast to do. For example, maybe there's three archery tests: hunting bow at 50 paces, great bow at 150 paces, and light crossbow at a running pig. You could drop by anytime and make tests for your champion. Most activity would be between sessions, during lunch, or toward the end of a slot if a game ended early.
You get a handful of artha at the beginning of the tournament. Use it wisely!
Some of the fun would be deciding whether to be well-rounded, with the opportunity to earn points in multiple areas, or just go for, say, winning the joust. Of course this means I'd have to post the competitions and scoring criteria ahead of time. That's probably a good idea anyway, it'll force me to get it done and it'll get better with peer review.
The last slot of the day would be the only slot you'd have to actually sign up for, and only if you're interested in competing in the joust. That's when we'd do the PVP. Take the top jousters and have them pair off, throw in a couple ringers if necessary, and make a ladder out of it. I could probably come up with some fun prizes from my collection of geek paraphernalia (Congratulations, you win the grand prize --- a stuffed Bella Sara horsie!)
Thoughts?
