I was wondering what was wrong.

You seriously have to wonder what's wrong with those guys.
Bullying a bunch of poor geeks, really...

Just one more thing, the main page with all the links is kinda screwed up.

Luke,

I've heard a lot of people talk about how phpBB is very vunerable to attackers now. Apparently it's so popular that their are a lot of available hacks out for it on the net just a google away.

Recommendations, can't say for sure, a friend of a friend of a friend switched over to a "Simple Machines Forum" (http://www.simplemachines.org/) but I can't say for sure how reliable that is. It is free so, you could give it a try. They may even have tools to convert phpBB accounts to it's system too, not sure. I won't swear to that.

Good luck though, damn hackers have been at it like crazy lately on the web when it comes to exploiting phpBB.

I don't think PHPBB is more vulnerable, it's just well understood and commonly deployed. Keep up on all updates to PHP, PHPBB, Apache, the OS, and the back end database (usually MySQL), lock down network traffic except wanted traffic to/from the forum, back up the data regularly, and watch logs for sniffing and/or hack attempts and block traffic to/from originators of such activity. That's about the best you can do with any publicly available server like a PHPBB setup.

I don't understand why someone would want to damage someone else's property, whether physical or virtual. The potential impact to a business (this IS a business forum) opens up potential litigation, but more importantly to me, I have to wonder how a hacker would feel if someone, say, poisoned their pet. It's a very similar class of social action, in my opinion. Not that I advocate such reactions to hacking, mind you...

ANyway, glad the forums survived and I hope that things stay stable and unhacked.

I asked a friend of mine who knows a bit about computers. He said there were two main reasons why someone would hack/make a virus. 1) To make money. Sometimes they can get valuable information from computers. 2) To prove that they can do it. A lot of people, despite there amazing computer skills, are still little junior high school kids doing stuff just to be cool. The funny thing is, I thought people who were good at computers didn't submit to peer pressure, mainly because, like any other good and proper dork, hanging out with the "in crowd" doesn't matter.

What would you rather do? Smoke a cigarette to fit with the cool kids or burn a character and have hours of fun with your real friends.

So if you're a hacker for either of the above reasons, you're a loser because 1) You have roughly a b1 will and succumb to peer pressure like human body's do to the pressure of space, or 2) you're trying to steal monet from hard working people. That's just wrong.

...sorry for the rant, but I do not love getting hacked/virused/spywared.

Good point about money. Making money drives the increase in spam traffic; there's money in it. Who's paying for the spam to go out is a whole 'nuther discussion, but considering that a hacked system with an Internet connection can be used to generate spam, therefore money, there's a good reason to hack a whole lot of systems.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, though, Mickeroo. There are a LOT better ways to use computer savviness to make money, and a lot better things a person can do with their time than compensate for their inadequacies by making other people angry.

Anyway, back to watching server logs for me and thinking up campaign details using BW Revised... :)

Speaking of this, is anyone else having a lot of trouble doing things in the forums today?

In PHPBB there's a feature called word censors that can be turned on. It checks content of a post after it's entered and acts on them. Could be that it was turned on with odd settings.

I've had some cookie-related issues going on today, but I just changed browsers again, so it might just be my configuration.
