View Full Version : What would a BW webcomic look like?

I don't think it'd work.

I saw a banner ad for a webcomic with the selling point was that it made D&D 4E jokes. And order of the stick makes D&D 3.5 jokes.

Then I thought about what BW jokes you could even make in a webcomic medium. And I was baffled. I suppose you could make fun of trait or two. Or an obscure skill. But beyond that I got nothing.

Am I lacking imagination or does the humour come from some place else? It's not as if OotS ever makes a "hey, lets get a line of commoners..." joke. How do they do it?

Take every thread about trying to figure out combat with multiple combatants and write it out with really confused orcs and guardsman. It would be a freaking Monty Python sketch.

Yeah, I'm not comedic enough to pull it off but it's really easy for me to imagine how someone else would.

Beliefs and are fertile ground with characters stubbornly pushing on no matter the evidence on how stupid their belief is. "I am so the rightful king!"

Instincts could cause sudden, sharp, knee-jerk reactions. "I always carry a chicken into combat!"

And circles. Oh my. "I went down to the market to buy a fish and the fishmonger slapped me! Said my father raped his mother! Wtf?"

Self aware characters fiddling with their own beliefs, humans complaining about elves...I could totally see a BW web-comic being funny but it'd be funny to us.

Character 1: You don't have your mom as a relationship?

Character 2: No, didn't seem important when I was being burned up.

Character 1: You have to circle up your own mother? What if you fail?

Character 2: I know, that's why I don't seek her out; I just don't want her to hate me.

I could see a comic starting with one character laying into another character causing a big gaping wound. Then a few panels where they argue over mechanics, so it turns out the hit wasn't as bad as it seemed (did you remember your +1Ob? Don't forget the +1Ob for low light). Then someone points out something else they didn't take into account and it turns out the hit is a miss.

"I was born before the first sunrise. I fought in the first battles. I am so old that I predate the aging of elves."

"I am the wise woman of the cave. And, yes, I may only have B2 in any one wise, but I have a lot of wises."

"Hey, could you pass the fork?"

"You can't pass a FoRK! You can only use a FoRK to assist yourself!"

First panel: A noble knight astride his worthy destrier gazing out across an open field.

"I, Sir Thomas the Brave, will not falter until every last evil Orc is purged from the face of the Earth!"

2nd Panel: Pull back to a massive hord of Orcs and wolves cresting the hill.

*scribble* *scribble* *scribble*

"I, Sir Thomas the Brave, will not falter until every last evil Orc is purged from can walk safely on the face of the Earth!"

Dammit, I have a hard enough time with finishing Mouse Empires. Still, the above jokes are very very tempting...

Just do a comic of one of those interminable positioning threads with the characters getting more and more frustrated because their players keep changing their distances and weapon lengths.

I'm really feeling this lame Garfield strip rhythm with BW crap...its not good.

Character #1: Why do you get to go into dungeons and risk your life? All I ever do is get into arguments with my brothers.

Character #2: What are your beliefs?

Character #1: It shouldn't matter! I'm a player character; we go into dungeons and risk our lives. Let's see Belief #1: I will convince my brother to do my chores. B#2: Though I am the youngest, my brothers will see my wisdom. B#3: I will get past my family squabbles and get into a true adventure!

Character #2: Why don't you change your beliefs to be about getting into adventures and less about your brothers.

Character #1: What, and let them win?

"Hey man, you look terrible."

"Yeah, Sir Bob really thrashed me."

"Why did you fight that guy? You're lucky to be alive!"

"Dude, it was a challenging test. Ka-ching!"

I enjoy the suggestions posted thus far. Maybe I lack imagination too, though, but I think the OP has a point.

A lot of comics about game systems derive their humor from being ridiculously genre-savvy. Like Elan in Order of the Stick, they know contrived situations will come up, that the villain will have a close personal relationship with the hero somehow, and that the impossible is actually likely to happen.

Seems to me that Burning Wheel gets rid of a lot of that. If you write a Belief about it, or have a relationship with a person, they're supposed to be challenged, so it's not funny to point out how unlikely it is. And the impossible is actually really, really hard. Poking holes in how the DM integrates characters into the metaplot isn't funny, because everyone integrates themselves into the Situation. And so on. Burning Wheel makes explicit and rules-governed many of the things that are GM-handwaving in more mainstream RPGs. That strips a lot of comedic meat from the bone, though I personally believe it makes for better games.

Characters would suddenly use Dt like Alert which they hadn't exhibited before. A companion would then explain it to a another party member "He had that trait voted on at the end of the last page..."

Panel 1: Knight and companion on horseback,
Knight: "No, don't stay up in the saddle; it just means you get your arse slapped by it more."
Companion, "Ah, I've 4 dice thanks to your prep vs Ob 2, I'll be fine, and even if I fail, it's only a +1 Ob for a few minutes while I find the right herbs"

Panel 2: companion dismounting.
Knight: I'll wait here with the horses.
Voice from above: 1 success... as you go looking for herbs, you get jumped by a couple bandits...

Panel 3: Companion fighting bandits

Panel 4: Companion returning
Companion: Remind me to wait to roll until after the GM tells me what will happen if I fail...

One panel: knight in full plate nailing his mom, barefoot.

Belief: I will find the fourth wall, and I will break it as I vowed to my father.
Instinct: Keep an eye on changes in the text bubbles of my companions. Oh, and watch out for what the narrator says; it's often important.

"I begin my adventure a hardened Orc, no stranger either to violence or to the savage occult mysteries of my kind."
"Nine lifepaths!? How are you not a mangled cripple?"
"I rolled with loaded dice."
"You can't do that!"
"Sure I can! It's the Orcish way."
"That's cheating!"
"Careful, there, Follower. I'm feeling my fancy getting all flighty and murderous."
"Yes, O Great One."

A group of adventurers walk in on their buddy getting whipped and spanked by an older woman in fetish leather that's obviously his mother.

"You just had to spend those last resource points on a forbidden immediate family relationship! Gah!"

If someone wants to draw this and brainstorm, I will make a website and write it.

I'm down for this, let's go

"I'm so min-maxed you can never hope to defeat me, villain!"

"You're holding your sword like a fork. And you look like you're going to die from the firm handshake before our duel."

"Sure, I have B1 Swords now, but my gray stats will make me unstoppable in the long run. Strike me down, and I shall recover, train, and become more powerful than you can possibly imagine in a few dozen more sessions!"

"Unfortunately for you, plucky youth, I have Instinct: Never let the defeated hero learn and grow to defeat me. When he is at my mercy, I will strike to kill."

"Oh. Um. Now is when I wish I'd taken the trait Power of Friendship and a few more relationships. Or maybe one fewer hateful ones."

"If it makes you feel any better, your suicidal heroism might earn you a Deeds for your next character. Maybe even a free Reincarnated trait."

"Screw this. I'll just take the Persona for Moldbreaker. How do you feel about recruiting turned heroes as lieutenants?"
