View Full Version : Firearms Range Dice and Magazine capacity
So far, this what I have:
Range Dice
Pistol (.45): 1D Optimal, 1D Extreme (30m)
Shotgun, unchoked: 2D optimal, 2D extreme (50m) (less damage)
Shotgun, choked: 1D optimal, 1D extreme (70m) (more damage)
Assault Rifle: 2D optimal, 3D extreme (500m)
Magazine Capacity
Pistol (.45): 7
Shotgun: 7
AK: 30
how's that sound?

sounds spot-on to me. I think most .45s have an 8-round capacity, but don't take my word for it. The AK is spot-on, though.
I think in the revised SS is going to have rules for RPGs and grenades. The grenades are pretty much done -- the explosives rules are in the Revision.
RPGs... well, I've just always wanted to do rules for them and I think they'd fit right into the setting. Great for blowing up aliens!

Don't you already have RPG rules? They're called The Burning Wheel!
HAHAHAHAHA! I crack myself up!

Hmmm..does this mean there is an open position in the Burning Wheel corporation?

Sounds good so far. I would like to see more weapon types though (SMG, sniper rifle, machine gun). Also, I was thinking that we could have stats for different ammo types. They might increase or decrease IMS as well as the DoF roll.
Pistols for reference:
H&K USP (9mm, .40, and .45) all have a 10 round capacity.
Glock 17 (9mm) 17 rounds
Glock 20 (10mm) 15 rounds
Glock 23 (.40) 13 rounds
Glock 36 (.45) 6 rounds
FN Five-seveN (5.7x28mm) 20 rounds
Anyway, I know that the mythos of UaSS focuses on the.45, but I thought we might as well have a few others for reference.

Dangerous territory there, Skandall! Start elaborating beyond the most general type and suddenly you find yourself playing Shadowrun with lists and lists of useless gear!
I definintely see a few categories (pistol, shotgun, rifle, SMG, etc,) but keep in mind BW's weapons philosophy as shown in the rules. A sword is a sword is a sword in BW and this should be reflected in any modern campaigns.
That said, there is a precedent for specific "calibers" of arrows in BW (horsedead, frog crotch, etc) so a small variety in ammo wouldn't seem out of the question.

Its been a while since I checked out the USS, how much damage difference is there.

Indeed, you're right. A pistol is a pistol and I don't really see any advantage to having shopping lists of weapons (as fun as that was with Cyberpunk 2020).
What I think IS needed is more detail on different bullet sizes. A pistol that fires .45 can't hold as many rounds as one that fires 9mm, but the .45 does do more damage. Range, damage, and capacity should be based off the size of the round being fired modified by the type of weapon firing it. In this way we can still maintain a simple mechanic for modern firearms while also providing more variety.

I think basic categories work the best. If it were me, I'd look to one of the best and most fun examples of gun-fueled mayhem for my categories. I am, of course, speaking of Grand Theft Auto.
Pistol, Shotgun, SMG, Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle, RPG, Grenade (and maybe flamethrowers and heave machine guns if you want to get nasty)

You want THE weapons (http://www.septemberquestion.org/lumpley/guns.html) list check out Vincent Baker's (of Dogs in the Vineyards fame).
This here is the weapons list that answers the pertinent questions;
how can you get it, what is it ideal for, what is it good for and what uses should you not put this weapon, drug ect to.
If nothing else its worth a laugh.
And it makes you think about said weapon shopping lists.
Like the UaSS use of the iconic .45. It's not about how big a hole it makes at what range. It's about the imaginary feel of a big silverplated .45 long slide pressed against a temple.
Boom.

hell yeah.
thanks for the link, kaare.
Its still a little more detailed than I'd want, but it's still excellent. And of course, Vincent is YEARS ahead of me in game design land.
