Greetings everyone! Just another new convert to the game here. Now if I can only convince my players to see the light :P
In this regard, I was wondering if anyone has created a rules light version of BW to use as an introduction to the game. Specifically, I was thinking that it might be good to streamline the combat options a bit so newbies would not get overwhelmed with the options. So, my questions are:
(1) Is is necessary to do this?
and
(2) what obtions would to exclude?
Cheers,
Tyndale
If you truly want to do a BW "Light" game, the system is built right into the book this time. Use page 1-78 of the Burning Wheel for mechanics, and the Burning Rogues chapter for character creation.

The only way I see to "lighten" BW is to not do scripted combat, which is an option in the Fight! mechanics. Everything else is so basic, I don't see how it could be simplified.
In my own experience introducing the game, I've not even tried to lighten it up and everyone seems to get it fairly quickly.

Great. I will give this a shot. Ultimately I do not want a lite version cuz it does injustice to the whole system. But I think a stripped down one-shot will be less intimidating for my players. I also have to admit that it will be a bit easier on me to run

Hmmm...I think that I may stick with scripted cuz I think it I just love it so. I suspect it will be one of the hardest things to get used to, but I kind of view it as "core".

You might very well be right. It is going to take me a while to really get my head around the system and by the time this happens, it might appear less daunting.
Thanx for the help guys!

Everything burning becames lighter, especially when the fire yet on - then you can be sure you have light :)
Or in other words, without jokes, the system is very simple, why do you need it to be simplier?

I don't *need* it to be simpler, cuz in fact it is inherently. I agree with you here. But if I ever what to use BW with my current group, I need to avoid the *perception* to of it being too complicated. "Simpler" might have been a poor choice of words on my part. But given the leap of style it will be from the current d20 system, I feel that first impressions are important. It will definitely feel "foreign" if I can read the group right. In the end, I suspect that if I run it right, I have nothing to worry about. No pressure

I'm going to dispute the notion that the game is simple. It's actually rather involved and unusual. There is a lot to be aware of. Mechanics are the same across the board, but the system is a deviation from the norm. The curve is sometimes like a cliff--made easier by examples of course.
I have never had the game demo'd--I am learning these rules cold. The logistics of handling things is unusual, and (most especially) there are many, many, many, many little nicknack things all over the place that are important. It's not necessarily bad, but don't pretend that they are childishly simple or transparent. It's very different in terms of "turns" and resolution of actions from many games, and that alone makes it a bit tough to grok at first.
