Over here (http://www.burningwheel.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1309) Judd (Paka) suggest using B.I.Ts to allow the players earning artha for playing up to the cultural settings. Which IMO is brilliant.

I have of late used this to create my monsters and NPCs (who some of my players most certainly will say are monsters).

I start out by defining the the monster's (and NPC) role in the oncoming story, then I use this to create his beliefs and instincts.

Here I have then defined the three most important things of said monster.
1. What is this being doing in the tale we are about to spin, and thus what does he want froom the player characters.
2. Why does he act the way he does, and what makes him tick.
3. And when he ticks what instincts guide his behavior.

Then I dvelve into the crucnhy bits (no pun intended).

Looking at Rhuieglir (Raw Glory) a very old swordsinger elf who was one of the two betrayer princes that unleased the dragons on the elves back in the second age. Now blackened by hate and betrayal he has corrupted the tree of life by hanging the heads of those that challenge him from it. Extending its power into the Shadow-world.
1. He is the guardian of the Tree of Life, and he has inadvertedly obtained the Stone of Valor. The players must fin a way to make him relinquish the stone.
2. Belifes:
One day I will be Free.
Strength through adversity.
Only elves are worthy.
3. Instincts:
Never strike for the Head.
Never refuse a challenge.
Taunt the unworthy.

I had initally envisioned two solutions to this dilemma, a kill him in single combat and become the new guardian of the tree (dangerous because it has a mind of its own, not to mention Rhuieglir had G7 sword skill and elven chain.) or to present him with a bag that would allow him to travel from the tree and bring its power with him(dangerous because it would free one very dangerous elf upon the world). I was also open for inspired improvisational attempts by my players.

Chrstian, playing Tengel chose to challenge the Swordsinger, just as Glenn, player of Torwyn just discovered the second solution. The fight between Tengel and Rhuieglir was without a doubt the most intense and satisfying rolepalying battel I have ever had the pleasure to run.

But thats another post.
