...now in what I hope I can claim are good hands.

Wow. :D First of all, thanx to everyone who posts on these forums; the discussions here convinced me that even if I never got to run BW (which would be a tragedy), I would get at least $25 worth of enjoyment just from reading them.

So, I ordered both the two-book core set and Monster Burner (because, really, how can you not order a product titled Monster Burner???). I also notice that I have today, not 15 minutes after digging the books out of the Priority Mail envelope they where shipped in, received notice from Key 20 that my item had shipped... Huh... This seems to keep happening to me as, just after I ordered my copies online my FNLQSLCGS changed their reply from "Never heard of it" to "It was just solicited to us and we ordered a couple of copies".

I will admit to being immediately receptive to the game just from gazing upon the wonder that is it's layout and binding. Aside from adopting a four-point font and eschewing all illustration you could not come any closer to my unrealistic vision of the perfect rules text.

But the book that I have clutched in my hand at the moment (yes, I'm typing one-handed again) is Character Burner. Page 200, to be exact. I had heard good things about the Orcs in Burning Wheel, but    damn...

And to continue the pattern of strange serendipities, the current whacky free-form game seems to be running longer than expected while the WHFRP2 game may start sooner than planned; all meaning that I would have plenty of time to prepare to run my Black Company-inspired game using BW instead of RQ...

OK, now I have to go force myself to read the actual rules through before I burn a few hundred Orcs just for kicks...

Welcome to the boards.

Thor has an awesome Black Company inspired adventure that he ran for me a few weeks ago. Splendid stuff and the system really shined for it.

Dude, I still have a hard time not burning a few hundred Orcs every day.

Welcome, sir! I do hope you like the game.

Speaking of "Murderous"... No, wait, found it on p. 292; "Desperate", however (despite being mentioned in the example on p. 15), is a Character Trait, correct? Or is it a Dt or C-O and I'm just missing it?

I too am hoping to lead up to a Black Company BW game. Perhaps we could collaborate on details as we get around to it? Also, Thor, I'd love to see what you came up with for your adventure...if its in presentable form that you're comfortable sharing. I had just ordered the D20 Black Company book prior to BW (and reordered all 10 of the Black Company novels...it just felt appropriate :D ). Needless to say, the D20 book has received little attention. Burning Wheel Revised is a naughty attention whore. Welcome to the boards!

I think the plan is to clean the Demo up at some point and then post it here, though probably not until after the summer con season is over. However, you should know that it's only Black Company-inspired, in that it has the players as members of a mercenary company, and the characters are infiltrating a town behind enemy lines that is serving as a depot for the enemy's supply lines. It doesn't have anything like the Lady or the Taken.

I am currently at the point of starting to both harass players for character ideas (at the very least) and burn a few NPCs. It's been interesting... I'm finding that I may need to scrap some existing NPC ideas (unless I just model them instead of doing a full burn).

Powerful Wizards (not quite Taken, perhaps; I think that Taken would either be a very special LP or, possibly better, designed using Monster Burner) can be built just by picking an overly large number of LPs, possibly allowing the character (NPC?) to take the same lifepath (specifically the Sorcerer or something else appropriate) multiple times without penalty. And any decent Wizard (Goblin or One-Eye, for instance) should have some sort of age-defying magic... {Side note: I've seen references to "taking" Facets, but I can't find it in my rules... Something like that would definitely appropriate.}

If you're interested, I have posted some of my background info in my LiveJournal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/kaomera/), but nothing on the rules yet; I'm still re-reading the rulebooks...

The d20 book has some really good and consise background material, but I really don't think much of the system stuff would do you any good.

I think I'll go ahead and link the Black Company portion of this thread to an older existing one and just resurrect it instead of starting a new one. That seems to be the direction we're going now. Hope this isn't a breach of any sort of Forums etiquette. Just thought it would pay in the long run to keep things tidy. Anyway, here's the existing thread...

That's cool. Definately sounds very BCish and I look forward to seeing it if it goes up.

OK, at the BBQ yesterday I got to talk to / rant at several of the other players from the Tuesday group, as well as a few other random people, about Burning Wheel. The overall impression seems to have been "Cool, I need to get a copy of this".

We also sat down for a little less than an hour and messed with the Character Burner, resulting in one almost-complete NPC and a rough (and rather "interesting") idea for a second. I'll post about those once I have something that might actually make sense. I really wanted to narrow in on the BITs & Resources, but we ended up getting pretty deep into the actual numbers before people had to leave for work and I to catch my ride. But overall I'm pleased, and I'm hoping that the exposure to the "crunchier" side of things will let us spend more time on the "juicy" bits with less distraction when it comes time to burn the actual PCs.

I'm also thinking I might want a sheet with just the most basic character stuff (name, concept, BITS, affiliation / relationships / reputation, not sure what all else) as an "I would really like to get all of this stuff done before we quit tonight, even if there are some numbers not filled in on your sheet" thing.

FNLQSLCGSAlright, that's the second time you've said that, and according to Google, you're the only person to ever say it, what, pray tell, does that acronym stand for?

Just downloaded the Lifepaths of Man .pdf... Nice! I hadn't expected to get anything but just the actual lifepaths. A few copies of this should make character burning that much smoother.

My FNLQSLCGS, unfortunately, still has not got the BW stuff in. Well, they got one copy of Monster Burner, but it was dinged up and I think Aron is going to try and get it replaced. I guess he ordered three copies of the "base set", but got none. I went ahead and ordered 2 more copies direct from Key20, so if they get here as fast as my other stuff did I will have extra books to hand to players. In the end that means I can have one copy out here by the computer, one for carryin' around, and one as a player copy. Or at least that's how I'm rationalizing the expense.

I was wondering about this trait as well.

A simpe guide: If traits have no description, then they are character traits.
