Spellcasting=Tests?

Do spellcasters receive a test for their Will or Sorcery skill when casting? If so, how is it applied?

BW p 226 describes Will and Sorcery tests. Spellcasting is generally not the best venue to earn tests -- every test is a Routine test. Routine tests don't count for stats. So Will can't benefit from casting.

But we do allow artha spent while casting to be put into either Will or Sorcery.

Yeah, p226 and p228 is what led me to the question. I saw that Will would be tested through sustaining tests and that Sorcery skill would be tested through 1st and 2nd readings. That got me to wondering if that was the only time Sorcery was ever tested, while learning new spells. You're first sentence though has me a bit confused though. Are you saying that casting a spell does provide a routine test that is not applicable to Will but is applicable to Sorcery?

Casting spells with the Sorcery only counts towards advancing Sorcery skill, never the Will.

You factor the advancement test just like anything else, dice rolled versus Obstacle. Since you are rolling so many dice, 99% of the time the test will be a Routine one. Routines are still necessary for Sorcery skills of 4 or less.

The easiest way to get harder Sorcery tests is to work with Abstractions.

The only way to get Will tests associated with Sorcery is through Maintaining Spells tests.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. So casting a spell does count as a test that is applied to Sorcery, typically a routine test. I just didn't know how that was clasified since casting spells always utilizes Will as well.

Consider the Will dice as special Helping dice, if it helps.
