Doing research for the Monster Burner, going off on Tolkien spiral rant:

What if men were a virus? What if Men were the reason that dwarves and elves were dying out. What if all the passing on into the west, end of days junk was just elder mythology? That the real reason, that none of them comprehend, is that men are a virus and it is killing them? causing them to go infertile and mad?

like the europeans hitting meso and south america. they came only to explore and see the wonders of the world, but all around them the civilization decayed and retreated at their passing. They brought disease (and steel) and ended a unwittingly ended a millenia of civilization.

a very interesting idea, let me add one of my own: what if (as a result) humans would believe themselves simply to be "fitter" (more fertile, mature quickly, attempt to achieve great dids in short time) and would claim more land and more resources for being "fitter" ("we need lumber, that ancient forest looks like it will do) and the other races will be increasingly unable to stop them.
so we have the big, expansionist human empire(s) vs. the small settlements of the indigenous people and the only thing preventing the struggle from becoming violent is the existence of orcs, which breed so quickly they pose a threat no one can ignore.

I dug how Conspiracy X did this with the Grays. Basically the Grays were here to either experiment or exterminate mankind because, as very psychically sensitive creatures, merely the way we THINK was killing them from across the galaxy.
