Moving on... I dunno if this has been covered (are there any Revised Edition erratta anywhere that I should know about, in case I ask something that's already covered there?). I'm a bit perplexed by the Advancing Abilities table and guidelines on BW p42/43. They don't seem to tally.

The text on p42 seems to imply that, for example for 8 dice rolled, a Routine test would be one with an Ob 4 or less. A Difficult test would be one with Ob 7 or 8, and a Challenging test would be one with Ob 9 or more. But then that means that a test with Ob 5 or 6 doesn't show up here.

But the table shows something completely different. It says that for 8 dice rolled, Routine is Ob 5 or less, Difficult is Ob 6-8, and Challenging is Ob 9+. The other columns are different to what the text states too.

And also, there's a dark diagonal line going from the top left to bottom right of the table. It's not entirely clear to me what (if anything) this is supposed to represent, and it's not mentioned in the text. It does vaguely follow the "D" results though.

The table also isn't internally consistent either - for one or two dice rolled, a D result only occurs when the obstacle is equal to the number of dice rolled. For 3-6 dice rolled, it's as described in the text. For 7+ dice rolled, a D occurs when the obstacle is equal to, one less, or two less than the number of dice rolled.

Which version (if any) is correct?

It seems to me that Challenging should be an Ob that is higher than the number of dice rolled, Difficult should be an Ob equal to or one less than the dice rolled, and Routine should be anything less than that. But then that would mean that all tests involving one die rolled were Difficult, which may actually make some degre of sense come to think of it - at first, things are usually hard... But then there'd be no Routine tests for that level...

Has this already been noticed and covered somewhere?

Welcome over here EDG. I don't know if there's an official errata or not, but Luke has previously indicated that the table you are reffering to should be the go to source.

Ah, but if you FoRK something in for an extra die on an Ob 1, roll, there's your routine test. All helping-type dice, with the exception of Artha, count towards the number of dice rolled when determining the level of the test.

Nota Bene the text at the top of page 43. Use the table.

The math gets a little funky for certain vs obstacles. Therefore, in order to keep it fair and reasonable, the level of the Difficult test has been varied in some cases.

As for Ob 1. Metalbard's got the answer.

I did, but that bit also said that "the guidelines above [ie on page 42] were correct". But the guidelines contradicted what the table says, hence the confusion.

Thanks. (BTW, does that diagonal line on the table mean anything?)

Personally, I think the slightly shaded outline around the Ds do that quite nicely on its own. The line, on the other hand, makes me think that it's highlighting something important about what is directly underneath the line, when it's not. It's more distracting than helpeful IMO, anyway.
