This character is for use in the "Burning Keiber" PBP thread described here: http://www.burningwheel.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1566

Concept: An aspiring hunter extraordinaire (and unknown keyling)

Character Name: Avan Lasla

"Born in a small viliage outside of Keiber, Avan grew up in a semi-advanced hunter/gatherer society. The men prized the hunt above all else and the leader of thier clan was determined each year by the largest beast brought to the villiage before the autumn feast, after all, someone with that much meat right before the harsh winters would have sway in any place.

"Anyway, Avan was a lame hunter. In fact, he could go a whole season without catching anything. For disgracing the village and the name of the hunt, he was exiled, forced to wander alone and fend for himself. After long years of this humiliation, he finally left the village to join the Ranger academy in the city, where he would hone his bow and tracking skills and become the greatest hunter that ever lived."

Association: 1d Affiliation with the ranger academy in the city; I’m a student there.
1d Reputation as an up and coming ranger in the academy. Top of my class.

Contacts: The headmaster of the academy is my uncle. He came from the village to teach others his art and hates the fact that he is forced by law to teach me as well.

Traits: Elven common traits, unlucky.

Beliefs:
- "Slaying the beast will start my path to greatness, as well as make me a hero.
- "The men of my village will pay dearly for their actions against me."
- "I will be the greatest hunter in the world, even if it means begin the only hunter."

Instincts:
- "Always take note of tracks in the area."
- "Always fight defensively."
- “At the first side of danger, stealthy and threne.”

Am I missing anything? Did I do anything wrong? What do you guys think?

Nice BITs. If i were you I'd shave off some points from threne and bow skill. You want to be greatest Hunter in the world (not the greatest bowman)? Show it with Your skills. Make sure that you'll be able to notice and track [Rhyme of the Pathfinder/Song of Paths and Ways] your game first, killing it is usually the easiest part (especially when you're helping yourself with Call of the Wild). Remember that all of the elven cheating-songs are open-ended (so better invest in them in the begining - martial skills (bow) are usually easiest ones to advence in play).

I agree with Dro. Drop Bow and Threne to B5. Add a point to Observation and buy a Wise with General points. Something like Forest-wise or Keiber-Wise. Even at B3 it'll pay dividends in FoRKs and Help.

Or you might consider dropping another point somewhere and using a General Point to buy a social skill, Persuasion, perhaps. Very useful to have in this day and age of Duel of Wits.

Yeah, I was thinking of getting a social skill but I don't think they would fit my character. I mean, he seems like the kind of guy that would rather just fight. After all, to him, he's right anyway.

OK, so bow and threne to 5 and boost ari of gates and call of the wild to 5. Is that good?

You're going to get screwed when you're forced into a Duel of Wits. More than that, you're going to be bored when everyone else is debating and you're sitting there: "I can't help. Don't have any social skills."

I was actually wondering about that. But couldn't I just use something at a double obstacle penalty? I mean, it would be hard to win, but my character isn't a talker. And I don't want it to seem like I'm all for combat, because I'm not. I just want it to be hard for him to be social (note: not hard in the sense that he will avoid social confrontations, just hard to succesfully negotiate them). Plus, I figure that if he's forced into Duel of wits, as he learns a social skill, it will represent how he realizes that not everything can be solved by killing the other person (like when he needs to solve a problem when surrounded by the king's guards)

I don't mean to be arguing with you, I just wanted to present my side. What social skill would you recommend, if any? I think one of the biggest problems was that I didn't see any that fit how my character would act. Most of them seemed too scholarly or political. The exception would be interrogation, but could I always use that? I was actualy thinking of picking it, but it seemed like I would still be screwed most of the time in a duel of withs when interogation wasn't an appropriate way to argue.

I think you know what you're doing Mickeroo. You've set up your character for some awesome growth! Don't take a skill just because it'd be mechanically useful. Take skills because your character would have them.
