BW is currently working on a Monster Burner - a book full of premade monsters, Monster Lifepaths, and Monster bits to build your own terrors. There are already LPs for Great Wolfs, but what else would you like to see included?

Centaurs.

They'd have to be really GREAT spiders, though.

(Hmm. How to account for the cannibalistic tendencies ? And the fact that, until you get to lolth-size, you aren't safe? Oh, well, it's a difficult life.)

Hey i picked ents because it was the coolest part of Two Towers when the Ents went and kicked some major orc ass, but eagles would be awseome too

are there Great versions of every animal, such as Great Wombats?
The PC's in my game just met a Great Wolf and got curious about the existance of other Great species.

Great Wombats, Batman!

That is completely up to your and your imagination at this point, I think. If you do create some of your own, please post them!

Well, I kind of meant the moniker "Great" to imply larger, humanistically intelligent and cultured versions of animals. As you will soon see, Spiders get an even more indepth treatment than Wolves.

I have plans to do at least one other "Great Animal" race, probably Eagles. It's tough to chose one that is interesting, playable and different from what we have. (I want them all to be unique.) But I think I a flyer race will work.

I don't have any plans to develop Wombat culture and magic. I don't know why, but it doesn't really tweak my geek. Nor do I have plans to do any Attack of the Giant Animals monster stuff.

Wombats are all yours if you want em. If you actually do them, I will publish them and you'll get all the credit.

I don't even know what a wombat is.

Hmmm, Well here is a list of possibilities...

(disclaimer: keep in mind that I have not read the monster burner pdfs yet, in case there are similarities to suggestions... having gotten done with Gameplay today and forging through Character Burner tomorrow, Monster burner is on my list...right after Magic Burner files... I love magic)

Solid fantasy options:
Minotaurs/Beastmen - I know they have been done to death but a new approach would be interesting (the applications I have seen so far make minotaurs too human or just bad-guys). And I have a real soft spot for minotaurs.

Fae/Spirtes - small little flying magicy dudes... have a lot of potential

of course, the Hoszrem and Gryphons

Less mainstream options:
Some asiany possibilities - kappa, tengu. oni (ooo, oni Lifepaths...)

What about undead options?

Maybe alternate paths for any race (or almost any race) becoming something else... vamps, weres, undead, draconic, fiendish, etc. And more importantly a culture around it.

Some sort of energy creature like a living willow'wisp, etc.

These aren't necessarily terribly unique (okay, I admit I tend to keep a few ideas to myself for my own writing) but with a little Burning Wheel magic many of these ideas could really come into their own and be enormously fun to play or encounter.

I was "fortunate" enough to see the business end of a Great Spider and it was NOT pretty. Thank goodness there were two of us and I was a Great Wolf Spirit Hunter.

No, I hadn't seen the pixies... but they seem cool. I like the pixie dust routine. I think with LifePaths and expanded magic and culture this race would be fun to play. The problem would always be making them not goofy. There is always they guy who wants to play stuff for their comedic value rather than for the story and development. That annoys me. Its okay to bring levity to the game, but I think there are only specific circumstances where its appropriate to game for the sake of levity (pun games and homor games like Floating Vagabond and Tune are, of course, such appropriate times).

But I digress :)

Hey eruditus you've won right  , but yes when you take a peek into spider's webs you may consider yourself kind a lucky ;) And my spider was on a mission so i rather flee, than fail my mission (and face far worse consequences :))

BTW of the above choices the Spiders and Eagles are my first two choices.

What about a "deathpath"? Where you burn a character as normal for a NPC but then you must choose how they die, hence what type of "undead" they return as and have paths that allow for custom stories to occur?

E.G. A scout dies in the desert, his corpse sits under the sand until a evil wizard ensnares his soul to do his bidding and creates a "sand wraith". Later while he is scouring the desert, serving his master on some task his master is slain by heros and he is freed. Hence you have a "Sand Wraith" with depth to his story.

Maybe even have expanded deathpaths to simulate how decay has affected their appearance or how they staved off the rotting?

E.G. A cooper dies on ship, conditions are right for him to return as a "zombie". He wanders the ocean floor (Becoming bloated and fish eaten). Walks ashore to terrorize a costal village gets set on fire by torch weilding villagers and is sent back out into the sea. Thus 2 paths taken = blackened and bloated zombie who is afraid of fire. Again more depth, specially if the zombie is making crude barrels with rotting animals in them.

Just a few ideas.

You are mad. Welcome to BW! :D

I think Undeath will be handled in the Monster Burner probably as Traits you can buy: Wraith, Zombie, Skeleton, etc.

don't listen to kublai, he doesn't know what he is talking about.
There will be no Undead in the Monster Burner. None.

The first time you see Undead in the Wheel will be when you are creating them using the Nigromantic rules in the Magic Burner.

However, i actually like the deathpath option.
Perhaps there will be a short Death Burner someday. that could be fun. But that's for another post! If you want to brainstorm for that. Start a new thread!

 Nigromantic......

I am trying to keep serious here... but Nigromantic? :?:

It IS pronounced "Neegro" right? :?:

Is Buckwheat envolved?

No offense nor racial slander intended, but its hard to hear that without thinking "O Tay!"

Could a name change occur with suggestions?

Don't want to tap into too much non-game stuff here but:

The roots defined as follows:
Necro = Death.

Nigro = Black, as in the color.

Why the choice? Necromancy is overused and just plain boring. Black Magic, Nigromancy, will encompass more than just dealing with dead things.

Though technically Nigromantic spells, in sorcery, would involve the Destroyer or Taxing facet.

Damn "someday"

Hope you don't mind me using (and siting) your deathpath idea, DigitalApex. I think its GREAT and will be going into my designs for the undead campaign :)

Anyone here play Exalted/Abyssals? This would so rock for a grittier version.
