Concept:
Character like Gene Wolfe's Severian. In BW couldn't find Executioner, so used Desperate Killer (not quite right). Accordingly, I substituted Hard-Hearted for Murderous and replaced the 2 points for Madman and Desperate with Thousand Yard Stare as I thought this more applicable.

Character Name:
Severian

Belief 1: The Guild is just plain wrong, they'll see the truth in the end
Belief 2: Gallerius the Master Prefect is jealous of me
Belief 3: Power comes to those who wait ... patiently

Instincts:
Instinct 1: Always listen intently to what is being said for inconsistencies, lies, ommissions, incongruities (they always give themselves away)
Instinct 2: Never tell the truth - avoid, embellish, lie (never let them know the true and inner workings of your mind, thoughts and feelings)
Instinct 3: Never miss a chance to terrify the accused (or their families) to extort money (you know how horribly painful it is if I don't hack your head off in the first blow)

This is my 2nd BW character. Interested in hearing feedback on this one as compared to my first one. Thks.

Check back your PTGS it should read: Su:2 Li:4 Mi:5 Se:6 Tr:7 Mo:8. Sup = half Forte rounded down +1 (2 for your guy), space between tolerances = half Forte rounded up (2 in this case). I really like this guy, but i'd drop Torture to 5 and raised Ugly Truth to 4 (or opened a new skill). Second belief is awesome, rest of them not so good, especially third one (if you plan to play this character), Thor will take care of them :). Instinct 2: where is your Falsehood skill ? (also usefull for instinct no. 1 or something like Falsehood-Wise would work too). I think you'll also need Extortion skill for instinct no3. Reember that you can always purchase skills not listed in your character LP's by spending general skill points.

Character Name

Beliefs
1 The Guild members shame our profession, I'll make them see this truth even if I have to burn their eyes out to make them see it
2 Gallerius the Master Prefect is jealous of me, I will have his position and his head when I wrest control from him
3 My Powers are already vast compared to my brethren, I embrace my exile to search for esoteric knowledge to help me overthrow "The Inner Circle"

Instincts
1 Always listen intently to what is being said for inconsistencies, lies, ommissions, incongruities (they always give themselves away)
2 Always react politely and urbanely - it puts people off and confuses them as to your real motives
3 Never tell the truth - avoid, embellish, lie (never let them know the true and inner workings of your mind, thoughts and feelings)
4 Never miss a chance to terrify the accused (or their families) to extort money ("you know how horribly painful it is if I don't hack your head off in the first blow")

Updates
1 As per suggestions I lowered some of the skills, added others. I reduced reading, writing, code of laws etc as the guy as an "Eidetic Memory"
2 Gave him a superior execution sword (not fleshed out, but the sword in the Gene Wolfe books I believe was hollowed out with mercury / lead in the hollow that increased the blow for executions, I'm not sure, but I don't think it was practical for fighting?
3 I reworked the beliefs based on Thor latest update. Interested to see did I understand it right? I also based on Drozdal made sure that I had skills that matched instincts indicated

This might be handy, too:

DUDE! Those Beliefs are AWESOME!I'll second that. It seems like someone was reading your belief workshop (http://www.burningwheel.org/wiki/index.php?title=Belief_workshop) Thor ;)

Hi Thor / Droz,

Thanks for that guys. Yes, Thor's workshop on beliefs is very appreciated. It will make it easier to take players through the development of their beliefs.

Severian is a much more fleshed out character (without being a 32 page description). The character has already signalled to the GM what he wants to do and get involved in. As the beliefs are resolved and artha / etc earned what will happen to him .... Only time and playing would tell.

The most crucial thing is that the beliefs are far more interesting and immediately more challengeable by the GM.

I really like the idea of doing BITS for the world and the campaign as well. A method of signalling to all the themes / etc. and then the BITS for the PC's.
