Ok, in the process of burning up characters, one of the players wanted to buy a relationship to an NPC who he wants to be a major rival for the group.

The player has outlined the NPCs disposition towards the group as well as the character's basic history.

(for our group) With a lot of relationships, I haven't really had a need to really go in and stat them out, especially since the players tend to go for the minor 5 pointers and such. But with this guy being a major antagonist and probably a heavy hitter, I feel like I oughta go in and burn him up.

So anyway, the real question is, do I burn him up myself while being faithful to the vision provided by the player, or do I have the player who bought the relationship do a full burn?

Burn him up as a group! That way you stay faithful to the player's vision of the character with everyones input. If he is to have an impact on the entire party then I believe everyone should have some input.

I liken it to making a new monster out of the Monster Burner where players have input on any new wee beastie the DM makes.

Nod, nod

It's like, I'm totally down with group participation, but between thinking of a good opening script for the Jihadis (we're playing Burning Sand, the PCs are nobles) as well as thinking up some challenges to 7 players worth of bits, there's a part of me that wants to nail down as much as I can before the session starts.

But I hear you. I'm thinking, throw caution to the wind, start the session off with a good "villian" burning session and fly by the seat of my pants.

Now, we're still at the stage where character burning takes awhile for our group, so I'm not sure if they want to go through all that again; some of them are really itching to play. So maybe I'll do a real quick group outline of the lifepaths and bits, wing the rest for one session, the flesh out the details over email in the two weeks we've got between sessions.

Hmm

...or you can have the player character burn the villain and turn him over for peer review before the game.

from my standpoint, I'd ask the player to give you all the details he imagined for the villain, then I'd come up with my own BITs and skills and Reputations for the villain.

Either way is cool, though.
