In case you couldn't smell the blood in the air:

We played Inheritance again this weekend at MACE. 6 players: Father, Mother, two Sons, the Mad Priestess and the Dwarven Fatespeaker.

I made changes to the Dwarf based on Alexander's comments from the first playtest. And that seemed to bear immediate fruit as that player had no trouble at all with the content of the will.

And the game was fucking blazing hot. Ridiculously hot. Shouldn't-be-legal kind of hot.

how'd it go without the full complement of characters? or how did you decide which characters to include when you only had 6 players?

Well, father, mother, two sons and the Dwarf are required. I felt that in a smaller game, the Missionary was not required and that he would tip the balance in his favor. So I set him aside, laid out the other four characters and let the players choose which one they wanted. Worked out fine.

The player, Nic, chose Gefjon, and was brilliant in the role.

good choice! Gefjon has a lot of power in the society and is a balance to the svartalf in a different way than the Missionary.

did you have to play the others as NPCs then?

yes, i interjected a few comments from Kaare, Aurvandil, and Ran and that's all that was needed.

I played in this game and it completely blew my mind. Even the 'you sit outside the door and listen in' bits were great. Whenever I look at the copy of Burning Wheel I bought from Luke right there (with 'Fucking Viking Opera' inscribed inside), I will remember one of the best games I've ever played in.

Everyone got a moment to be awesome, and everyone stayed completely engaged the whole time. I was completely wiped afterwords. I can go into more detail, but I'll leave it at that for now.

(I played the returning son)

That settles it! Next year, I'm stayin' for the whole weekend!

Assuming, of course, that the Wheel will burn next year at MACE?

Cool beans!

Did the svartalf rewrite anyone's beliefs? Shame there wasn't a missionary around to kill, but I agree he's supernumerary in a small game.

Was this the game where the Dwarf bailed? How did that play out?

Wow. Rumors on ze internet sure do fly fast and free. No, no one bailed. Yes, the Svartalf rewrote Grisbearne's Belief: "Your line shall be ended by this treachery."

That makes me happy. I'm chuckling fiercely at work, and earning strange looks.

The bailing thing I picked up from Forge natter...
