View Full Version : How far apart should the PTGS levels be placed?

I know it says in the character burner that between Su and MW, set apart by half Forte exp, round up. My character has P4, F5. So that's 3 for Su, 6 for Li, 7 Mi, 8 Se, 9 Tr, and 10 MW, isn't it?

The reason I ask this is because in the Rogues' Gallery part of BW, there is, for instance the Young Chronicler (p. 284) with the same stats as me (though his MW is 11, not that it matters). His Li is 7. Why? On page 287 the Experienced Soldier also has a Li of 7. Again, why? Page 288, Rogue Wizard, Li is 5. All of these characters have Forte 5. The monster burner has many similar misconsistencies in the separation between PTGS steps. The only one I found with the same stats as me was Imp (p. 304). There the levels were calculated as I calculated them. I'm a bit confused.

Here's a link (http://www.burningwheel.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2379&highlight=) to a thread about this and a link to stormsweeper's PTGS calculator.

Thanks for the quick response and good link! It seems the ones I listed are typos (there are a lot of them BTW). Anyway, thanks.

Yes, I was aware of this (that's why I said not that it matters). My point was his Light level.

I would conjecture that the characters with the incorrect PTGS spacings were made by the same person, and the PTGS error in all of them wasn't caught when they were inserted into the text. I certainly know I messed up PTGS all the time for my first characters, part of the reason I made the calculator.

actually, in BWC, the PTGS had a bit more flexibility. You could set your tolerances lower than their prescribed limit. Technically, there's nothing wrong with this in BWR, either. But it confused the hell out of people so we just standardized the PTGS.

SO! Some of those tolerances are like that on purpose. Some of them are typos -- I agree there are a lot in that section. However the Character Burner section gives instructions on setting your tolerances. And I know that they are correct.
