A couple questions from my latest tryout of BW combat:

1) Does a scripted Avoid help against ranged attacks from either thrown or missle weapons? During the fight, one of the thugs was hurling bricks at the soldiers, and at one point, he threw just as his target scripted an Avoid. At the time, I resolved the Throw versus the Avoid, but now I'm not sure that was right.

2) Is there any Ob penalty for long distance throwing, or is the only pentalty that your wind up takes longer (lob vs. throw vs. hurl)? If there is, I couldn't find it in the book or on any of the summary sheets.

BTW, as much as try to keep it straight in my head the fact that there is a "Throw" manuever to toss a weapon and a "Throw" manuever to toss an opponent keeps confusing me. One of these needs a new official name, although I'm not sure what to suggest.

It is my opinion, after doing a bit of research, that is it not possible to "avoid" (ie, use all of your Speed dice to create your opponent's obstacle) missile weapons.

Characters who are moving (and Avoid does count as a Jog move) do raise their opponent's obstacle. Obstacle increase based on Speed of the opponent. It's in the BW (which, amazingly, i don't have in front of me).

Thrown weapons have their own individualized ranges based on the type of weapon and the thrower's Power. The penalties for throwing in each range are the same as for other missile weapons.

Yup, movement obstacles I was able to find. I'm actually quite comfortable with the "Avoid doesn't help against ranged weapons" ruling.

Um, okay all I can find is the chart on BW197, where power based ranges for Lob, Throw and Hurl are listed, but the only obstacle bonus/penalties listed are for pointblank and inside pointblank. Was it your intention that Lob Throw and Hurl be equivalent to Short Medium and Long for missle weapons? If so, I think that's worth an errata (unless I'm totally missing where it is set out in the books).

Whoops, I finally found the Ob penalties for thrown weapons in the book: BW97, very bottom. Apparently they just didn't get taken to the summary charts at the back of the book (or the GMs screen)

So you can put down that wakisashi now...
