View Full Version : Dramatic character death and burning a new character

My group played Burning Wheel last Sunday, and my character died in a large battle. I wanted a dramatic end to his life, and this was the chance to make him a legend, so we agreed no matter what the outcome of the battle, he would die in it.

The battle was won, my duke became a legend for his sacrifice in battle, and the Evil Empire(tm) was forced out of my homeland. This marked a nice spot to end the "season", do the vote and move on to new adventures. I won the MVP, and together with my unspent artha my character went to the grave with 3 persona.

So, what happens when I burn a new character? Both me and Erlend (the GM) recalls something about unspent artha going over to the new character, but we couldn't find it in the books 3 am. I know DitV has rules giving you a little extra when you make a new character after your old one died. Are we just confusing the two games?

If we are mixing the rules, would making this a house rule knock the game off-balance?

I haven't come across that in the books. Are you thinking of the Aura of Martyrdom trait?

I don't know where the rule is either, but I do remember reading it. I think your Duke gets a Deeds point as well, and that transfers as well.

I don't want to hand out Deeds points without a really good reason; are you sure this merits such a grand point? (I'm Magnar's GM.)

Honestly, I don't ever recall a rule for transferring Artha from one character to another, but since new characters usually start with a little Artha, I don't see why you shouldn't start with what you had.

I seem to remember reading this somewhere too, but may be confusing it with the the Burning Empires traits that let you die for a cause and hand artha over to the new PC.

There are traits in Burning Empires and Burning Sands that allow you to die for a cause and transfer artha. In Burning Wheel, the Dwarven Art of Rune Casting grants the ability to transfer a Deeds point from a doomed character to a new one. (page 62, CB)

I do remember seeing such a rule, but was it maybe in classic BW?
Don't have the books here, so right now I am just guessing.

It's a big deal in TROS but I've only ever seen stuff like this in BW in special case scenarios, like the aforementioned martyrdom trait.

I might suggest that some article of your original character's has those Artha placed in it (i.e making it a "magic" item).

"That's the shield that the Duke carried into the Battle of the Raven Fields."

Then, depending on your new character concept, your new character could inherit it. Just an alternative to the character to character idea.

That's pretty much the Martyrdom trait, if I'm remembering right. Not that you couldn't adopt it as a regular rule and drop/rework the Martyrdom trait.

Hell, create some kind of bleak setting combining martyrdom with a kind of ancester worship a general theme and give everyone the trait for free.
