I had spoken with the Crane-meister at Phil-con about the Resources stat and how he was using it in his games. Does anyone know what that system was or have a way they converted leftover RPs into cash for teir characters to tote around? What other systems do people have for money?

Just curious, can you give us an example of "left over" resource points?

i often find that "left over" rps are the result of: "I have SQ Arms and Armor, shoes and travelling gear. Don't have enough afford an SQ bow, what do I do with these remaining RPs? Can I just take a lot of money?"

What's your experience.

ps I love you Matt, but if you ever call me Crane-meister again, you're out of the will, off the christmas list and on my rpg.net ignore list.

Well, in my Tarshish campaign, I just took the little line that says "the GM should establish a conversion rate from rps to the campaign currency" to heart.

I'd always wanted a messy monetary system, so I established two main coins (the denar and the drachma) which smaller and larger denominations based of each one, and a conversion rate between the two. Then I set an approximate value for the denar in goods (my standard was a pair of boots or a barrel of wine), and established a ballpark conversion to rps based on comparing goods from the list in the character burner with goods on a list of medieval prices I found on the internet (turned out to be 1 rp = 20 denars).

Oddly enough, two of the three players characters started the game skint by choice. But having the conversion in place has been handy in getting a handle on "what would it cost me to get X".

I believe the general method of determining the RP value in coins is to figure out the value of 1 month's salary for that character during his last lifepath. In my campaign, that was 1 silver per RP. Also, it never hurts to have another contact, even insignificant ones.

Well The characters I have for my game are all 3 LP peasants for the most part. One is an outsider from a city, who bought all the contacts and equipment he thought his character would have. He has 4 Rps leftover and I said (since he was a mercenary type) he could keep that as his last payment in cash.

I like the idea of a conversion rate, I suppose I just haven't thought too much on what monetary system to use in my generic low fantasy world.

I did want to sort of figure out the Resource as a stat a la d20 modern's Weath system. SO I could use it in conjunction with the Burner's resource costs for gear, land, skill kits and servants.

Thanks for all the prompt responses. I'll have to remember to post more often on friday afternoons :)

ps. Big ol' 10-4 on that one Luke. (Is hoping somehow he's in the will for copy # 13 in the revised edition)

He has 4 Rps leftover and I said

If he has "all the contacts he wants," why not upgrade one or two of them from insig to minor? or maybe minor to important? this ups their relative usefulness, and this is "importance level" is completely decided by the GM and player prior to play.

Cash conversions work well, too. But I am leary of endorsing them too much. I can't stress contacts and affiliations enough.

BTW, we are now in the first major playtest of Resources. I'll let you know how it goes.

Send those ideas on over and we'll help playtest :D

Things in the campaign are moving well out of the north and more into the civilized regions where their contacts and resources will be far more important. I would love to try out a Resource system before developing my own.
