Every now and then I'll read some complaint about BW somewhere and well, let me give an example:

"I hate the fact that there are 3 types of Artha" and I wanna respond saying, well ok, "here's a way to run it with 1 type of artha and scaling costs for the more powerful stuff..."

But I end up thinking the end result is going to be subtlty different and more importantly inferior.

OR

"The lifepath system takes SO long and math HURTS MY BRAIN!" and I'm all, ok I'll do like a bunch of half-burned template-y sort of characters where the bulk of the work is done for you / all you gotta do is allocate these 5 skill points and these 2 trait points (and come up with awesome BITs but that's almost a seperate issue) and you're done! Heck, it's kinda like that other game you're familiar with, DnD where you pick a class / race combination that sets up most of the details for you and then you just allocate a couple of points, right?

and then I read:

Yay, I don't have to do lots of pointless rolling! Boo, someone's already done the work and I have no investment in it.

and he's right. If you're not invested, your game's gonna end up being flatter than a pancake.

So...

It's like I wanna dive in and help, but sometimes help just isn't helpful and you just gotta let em go.

:(

Anyway, pardon the vent; Burn on, guys, burn on!

It's good to hear that some of the flock have had trouble. The masses are all not ready to play Burn Wheel or any other indie RPG. Some people are happy with Core RPG's ie I kill things and take there stuff, the Core Story of D&D. (http://mearls.livejournal.com/97347.html)

Some just do not want a real story, what they want is some ultra Computer game that does more.. ( which I think we are getting closer to, and then D&D will be in a real bad place. )

My group lost one player from the D&D game after we switched to BW. She just didnt want to have the responsibilities that BW fosters on the players. yea, I am talking BITs here. But that's just how some game.

Hang in there I am sure in time you will find more coverts.. Try and find shared fiction that you can start from, that seems to help.[/url]

I'm running into similar problems.

They say: Handling time is too long, from the time I announce an action to the time it is resolved.
I say: It'll get better as we get more familiar with the rules.

They say: Starting a campaign is too heavy on the front end...too hard to get off the ground.
I say: ....What? Spending a week or two prepping for a campaign is too much work?

They say: Well, if we want make good characters we're going to have to read the whole Character Burner.
I say: Umm, no. First come up with a solid concept, and I'll help you pick out lifepaths. Then, selecting skills and traits is just a matter of spending points on what is available. The only thing you really have to hunt for is what you want to spend your trait points and general points on. Which should only take 15-20 minutes max.

They say: But we want to be uber.
I say: Sorry, but no one is perfect, you're all going to make mistakes, or fate is going to turn against you at some point.

They glare. I smirk.
