When a player-suggested idea does come up, give them what they expect at first, but then twist it horribly so that it takes the story in a unexpected way. That's the real job of a BW GM.

Sunday is our first real session of Burning Wheel. Our group has met two times already to hammer out the characters, the conflict and other details...but I was a little worried that my BANG for the next session might be another attempt at typical railroading.

The players are going to be trying to free themselves from a Nordic slaver and his brutal crew. The Norseman is on a mission...he is chasing this fabled banner that could make him a King in his homeland. The banner is believed to be in a far and distant city called Rakhira, sort of like a trading city at the center of many crossroads in the desert.

To make it there he will need a tough and hardy crew. Ferocious and strong enough to make the dangerous journey across the wastes. He will also need to call on some favours from some very mysterious and powerful poeple.

On board, as guests of the Pirate, is a party of mysterious assassins. They are a cult devoted to the Goddess Kali, and come from an ancient and mystical land called Hind. They are Korba's guides on this journey.

Korba's ship is a brutal, brawling, rugged regime. There is a strict hierarchy. Penelan Slaves at the bottom, Gold and Ivory Coast slaves at the top (mainly because the Norsemen value strength and ferocity over the timid and beaten Penalans). Above them are a handfull of Norse bondsmen, personal servants to some of Korba's men. Then there are the rest of the crew who are all warriors, part of a fraternity called the Wodansvolk. Among the Wodansvolk are twelve berserker warriors who have a special status as spirit warriors, and shock troops. Finally there is the First Mate and the Captain, Korba. Peripheral to these groups are the Thugs of Kali, who are aloof, but seem to serve as guides and personal guards too Korba. And then there is Korba's harem slave, Wen-yu - Run by Oorbee. She is a slave and an addict of Afyam, the narcotic substance that the Thugee's guard so dilligently. She is controlled by Korba, but has power because of her proximity.

Alex is playing - Amadou, the Gold Coast Slave and Dave is playing Guan, Wen-yu's brother.

So...the players want to free themselves from this regime. They want it so bad! When we last talked the planning was to start on the ship, but I have other plans. Korba, will raid a small island village, hide his ship in a cove, subjugate the village and start a boot camp. He and the assassin Thugs are going to condition the slaves, and any fit and able bodied villagers, into a mean fighting force. Mind control, and brutality. They will learn how to fight and sail like Norsmen, how to hunt and stalk like Thugs. They will be subjected to Fear, Hypnotic suggestion and Condbitioning. Korba wants them, "ground into a fighting force" fit to handle all the perils that the Rakhiran Wastes will throw at them.

I'm not sure if this whole development of raiding and subjugating a village is railroading the story or not?

What do you guys think?

Sanj,

This isn't a bang, it's yanking the rug out from under the players. You've led them to believe that the first conflict will be around the culture of the ship -- escaping it or overthrowing it. They've all written beliefs about it, right?

Changing the initial conflict into this montage sequence of training is going to kill it for them.

How about this: Let them make their attempt to overthrow the Captain, but when/if their plans get discovered, then have the Captain make them an offer. He respects tenacity, right? Well, he offers them elevation in the ranks for their continued service.

The next bang after that is easy -- the service he asks of them is going to be a bad one.

Thanks Luke :D

You know what my problem is? I get so caught up in dreaming up a story line in between sessions that everytime we sit down to play, I'm railroading the game in all sorts of directions.

Thanks for the advice.

So, when I started this thread I was lamenting about how I found it difficult to "Let Go" as a GM from my egotistic ambitions to 'write' the perfect campaign. You guys all told me that it was okay to relax a little bit and let the players, write the story as well. So I did. It was awesome, liberating and so much easier! No more wracking my brains trying to come up with the best scenario for so and so player. I discovered that players like to get their characters into trouble...or adventure.

Here's an awesome example of a messenger conversation between Dave Lawson (one of my players who is running Guan the Galley Slave) and myself about tonight's session.

Dave Lawson says:
Well what do we have to do? I'm not all that sure.
That stuff between the ship’s cook and I for sure.
Sanj says:
yeah! that would be cool...some Wen-yu and Guan stuff too
Dave Lawson says:
Yeah. Haven't really seen to much chance for us to interact just yet.
Sanj says:
i know...but I'll create the BANG to allow that to happen
Dave Lawson says:
how about this, if I succeed in getting into Skiven's good favour
Dave Lawson says:
We say that he had a helper lost during the storm
Dave Lawson says:
And I'm sorta replacing him on and off
Sanj says:
sounds good...very good.
Dave Lawson says:
I'm just concerned atm
Dave Lawson says:
because I don't know how to interact with wen
Dave Lawson says:
If I can deliver food or stuff like that atleast there's some more potential
Dave Lawson says:
errr hmm
Dave Lawson says:
of course they wouldn't trust me to delive food I don't think
Sanj says:
you'll have to roll and fork in some artha, and call on your veneer of obedience!
Dave Lawson says:
Yeah, huge.
Dave Lawson says:
Another thing I want to bring up.
Dave Lawson says:
The bosun
Sanj says:
yes
Dave Lawson says:
skulldig I think
Sanj says:
yes
Dave Lawson says:
He's caught me being a weasel a couple of times now
Dave Lawson says:
with the rope on deck
Dave Lawson says:
and I think another time also.
Sanj says:
babbling
Dave Lawson says:
heh
Dave Lawson says:
I think that there should be a decent chance of him being suspicious of me in general soon, if not alreaady.
Dave Lawson says:
Maybe some longstanding rolls should be made, like one a session, so that I stay under his radar
Dave Lawson says:
And if I fail then he passes the word to some of his cronies and they start to watch me closely, but secretly.
Dave Lawson says:
Trying to catch me at something untoward
Sanj says:
cool...inconspicuous...let it ride for a session
Dave Lawson says:
Just something I think he might do. Obviously he wants done with me. I can see him giving me enough rope to hang myself.
Dave Lawson says:
Like maybe he'll push for me to help in the kitchen. But then he'll search me often for food scraps or something.
Sanj says:
awesome..dave. we have plenty to work with tomorrow.

FUCKING AWESOME!!!!

Sanj,
...
The next bang after that is easy -- the service he asks of them is going to be a bad one.
