NPCs
Right, npcs goes here. I'll keep editing this thread in the future as we add more.
Oh yeah, question marks represent stuff that you don't know. It has nothing to do with me being lazy and not having defined it yet. Not at all. It is all very very secret and very very important.
Izabella de Maraine
Izabella is the young daughter of Lord Fortunato de Maraine. Among nobility her family was seen as the lowest of the high, as her father bought their noble title. Her father always told her it was because the inbred fools couldn’t stand the smell of hard workers, it reminded them too much of their own faults he figured.
She is rather headstrong and willful, but also very beautiful. She has lived a life sheltered by her father’s money, though he has allowed her many freedoms. She has demanded education in many things, from swordplay to history.
One night Izabella went out, disguised (badly) as a common girl. Somehow she met Cayitano and sparks flew. When her father found out about their liaison, he stepped in and cut off the connection. Last Cayitano saw her, a bunch of hired goons were dragging him away for a good beating.
Izabella is athletic and beautiful. She has refused to be kept inside and down and it shows. She has fine, symmetrical features and long black hair. Her nose is a bit hawk-ish and long, but she wears it like a badge of honour. Sparkling brown eyes and a slightly mischevious smile, noone is likely to miss her.

Captain Dougal of the Relentless
The captain´s story as it is known to his crew is fairly simple. He was a simple shoemakers son in Port Royal where he was supposed to follow in his father´s footsteps. He found that it would not do (after murdering his bastard of a father some say) and ran off to join the English navy. He rose quickly in the ranks, being a competent and savvy officer, but he was betrayed in some internal power-struggle and had to flee. Before joining the Relentless he sailed for some years as a buccaneer but when he joined the Relentless he fell in love. He knew he had to be her master and within 5 years he was.
The Captain is a powerful man. Neither tall nor particularly handsome, he is powerfully built and quick on his feet. He dresses as an officer should, relatively clean and well-ordered compared to the rest of you. With his almost blueish black hair and piercing blue eyes, a single glance is enough to silence anyone. He always speaks shortly and direct, he never muses or wonders aloud, most of what you hear from him is either an order or a question. His abilities and trustworthyness has earned him the title of captain.
Beliefs:
-The Relentless is my ship and I am her master, none shall challenge that.
-??
-??
Instincts:
-Keep my face shaven and clean.
-??
-??
Traits:
Galliard, ship doctor of the relentless
You all know Galliard's life story pretty well, he likes to tell it when he's had a good drink of rum. He was once a young man with a promising future, a young man destined to go far. Then he killed a man, for hitting the girl Galliard was in love with, or maybe the man challenged him to a duel for not adressing him with the prober title. It varies a little, depending on Galliard's mood and how much rum he's had.
One thing led to another and he first became a pirate, then a doctor and since a doctor on the Relentless.
Galliard is a drunk, but also a man who doesn't flinch if cannonballs are shaking the ship and everyone else is screaming, throwing up, or pissing themselves. Whenever you get someone on who fancies himself a gambler they get to prove themselves against Galliard. His poker face is infamous. Other than that he is a damn good doctor.
When somebody makes the mistake of acting on the bad reputation that ship's doctors often have, they instantly regret it if they did it while someone from the crew of the Relentless was present. Most onboard who have been wounded have felt his skilled hands and the only price he demands is a bottle of rum at the next port.
Lifepaths: City Born, Student, Desperate Killer, Pirate, Ship's Doctor, Ship's Doctor, Ship's Doctor

He's known among the crew for always keeping his cool and never flinching from dispensing violance.

Description:
Cayitano is a rugged man. Standing at just over five and a half feet. His tanned complexion and stubble covered cheeks only hightening the rough appearance. The outfit most commonly worn is a dark blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up above the elbows. A dark leather vest he leaves hanging open unless in a fight and black pants that are tattered around his knees. For ease moving about the ships rigging he never wears foot wear of any type. One thing to note is he always has atleast a pair of daggers on him.
History:
Cayitano is a the son of a spanish merchant by the names of Rolenzo De'Savante. However because of how dangerous the open sea is his father fealt it was best that Cayitano spend his time ashore with his mother. Yet this merely made the boy angry and he instantly ran away from home and turned to banditry. After a few years he grew tired of struggling to make a living robbing people, the highways were growing more and more patrolled and opportunities less and less available. So several of his companions took up freebooting, roaming the country side for what loot might be had and doing jobs here and there for a bit of cash, essencially becoming treasure chasers. But he couldnt stand being away from the open seas and finally returned. His life of crime and fortune chasing leading him to the one place he knew his skills would aid him, piracy. So for the past 4 years thats what he's been doing.
Cayitano is a tough nut to crack. Death, suffering and pain are no stranger too him. By the time he was fifteen he'd killed more than his share of people through his banditry. As a freebooter he'd suffered a nasty wound or two and as such he has no problems cutting down those who stand in his way, figuring its better them than him. He isn't one to flinch or shy away from danger if it means getting the coin. Money talks and its the best way to get him to listen. However don't mistake his lack of caring for being a outwardly evil or villanous man. He does what he feels is needed, those in his way he will kill as indifferently as he leaves those who let him be alone.
Because of the constant travel he owns two small shanties, one in a spanish port and another in an island village located in the Carribean. These serve as both places to rest between sailings, when in those ports that is, and places to hide out when the laws hot on his heels. He only has one person he truely cares for, the daughter of an influential family, Izabella de Maraine. When he was in port a year or so back he met the young lass and something in her spirit and charm broke through his cold nature and won him over. She's perhaps the one person he listens to and ironically the one person he's forbidden to be with. The last he saw her was when several of her fathers hired thugs had dragged him off for a beating. A less than friendly warning to stay away from her. After a rather unpleasant fight he awoke aboard a ship, the Relentless, and hasn't heard word from her since.

Hah! Good news, apparently they do have internet in Spain. Don´t expect a lot of posts from me though, as I have neither books or time for lots of gaming here.
A question though - I mentioned to put on EDIT tags when they changed their characters. Is that too much useless bookkeeping. I thought it would be nice - you´d be able to clearly see how characters developed over time. Opinions?
Also, Darke - good to see the third belief for Cayitano. It looks like Izabella will become a very important npc in our game.

Well, I had been toying the idea of him distrusting magic. To add a hint of conflict with our priest of the lost gods. But with his lack of involvement I wasn't certain if he was still playing or not. So went ahead and focused more on Izabella. I also tweaked my instincts to make them a little more situational and less vague. I wasn't happy with the one about always striking from behind, just too easily mis construed or abused. So i figured I'd play on his greed with go for the more valueble and pocket what you can.
I completely agree with a section for advancing by just editing our character sheets. But i figured no point in making that portion until it happens.
I plan on posting in the IC today or tomarrow, depending on if anyone else posts characters in here. I know we had 1-2 others who siad they would join but only us three have actually been truely active. So wanted to give a bit more time.
In any case i'm eager to start and do hope one or two more jumps in. As is we have the makings of a damned good story with plenty of internal and external conflict waiting to happen.

Govert Verkerk
Concept - Stark raving mad, heretic priest.
Born Noble -> Arcane Devotee -> Cultist -> Heretical Priest -> Weather Witch
Exposed young to the dark arts by his Tutor-Uncle Hennie Verkerk, Govert's thirst for forbidden secrets is as boundless as his stomach; he's never lost an eating match.
His research has taken him into sects and cults, to the secret knowledges of the Winged Serpent god, Quetz, and to tales of the notorious black arts
of DeWartes.
This dawn finds Govert making his way to the Rentless where his duties as navigator and chaplain await him - and none too soon; Church agents dog his steps, more anxious now since a certain nobleman was found "ritually murdered" they say. Govert released the spanaird to Quetz the winged serpent god. The nobleman's traitorous act, selling Dewarte's treasure map, demanded such and come next new moon, the nobleman's lovely daughter would be served up to Quetz as well, the local sect will see to that. Uncle would be pleased. Still, the agent's of the false god will only find more offerings to Quetz, and the remains of Dutch Commander Ros, who finally succumbed to DeWartes curse during the night. Commander Ros saught relief from DeWartes curse in exchange for his tale of DeWartes last stand. Govert considered him a gift from Quetz herself!
Beliefs:
DeWartes was a practioner(sp?) of the Blac arts; I must have his treasure for his secrets.
Blood for the god Quetz; The more I give in blood, the more Quetz favors me.
The Rentless will cover my tracks; sheltering me from the sleepers who would stop my gifts to Quetz, the winged serpent god.

Hexgunna - So good to see you´re still with us. Now we got a full crew aboard - time to set sail :D
Guess the paperwork issue is settled. We´ll see how it all goes...
Darke - I really don´t think you need any more conflict with Hexgunna´s character. It should work out as is.
TheLHF - Cool with the wiki thing, I also forsee lots of trouble with the instinct: "When shocked or confused in conversation, cover it up by telling a tall tale." That one made me smile :)
So the three primary plot hooks for you guys seems to be love, occult power and money... I wonder how I can mix those up. Can´t wait to get really started once I get home, though I would like to have some of those tall tales to read by then ;)

Is it too late to join? My initial thought when reading this was to play a weather worker but that spot is already well covered. So next would be to play the ships pilot. If it's cool to play I'll burn up a character. Fair warning. I've been reading a lot about BW but just got my books 2 days ago.

Hey Guys
I'm back from Spain and ready give things a little kick. I won't make promises, but I hope to post in the IC tonight or at least this weekend, then I should hold to the 5 posts/week schedule.
Peregrine - You are welcome to join and your concept looks solid - a gambler and a pilot will be very useful to the group :) . I think your beliefs need a little work though. You need one belief related directly to the treasure or to the group specifically (one of the others, or just people who know of the treasure map).
The belief: "Show Dad I can make more money as a pirate then he could make as a plantation owner" is perfect as-is.
"Develop the finest charts of the Gulf of Mexico" should have a sub-goal or a first step. I would like at least one of your beliefs to be a little bit more... immediate.
Make sense?
Hexgunna - We need to figure out what exponent your "Faith in Dead Gods" has. We're using the full version from the Monster Burner - meaning that it works exactly like faith, except it only works on people who believe in the dead gods. It sounds like you should have exponent 5 or 6, but take a look in the Character BUrner.

I kind of thought the show dad I can make more money as a pirate fit the treasure map although sort of indirectly. I agree the chart belief needs work. I of course ended up coming down with a cold and am just now feeling like being out of bed. Although laying in bed gave me a lot of time to read the burning wheel books.

Looks good Peregrine, but I would still like the last belief to change a bit... the gambling one. It might get you into a few interesting conflicts, but it would be better as a Trait or an Instinct... A character trait or related instinct would work.
I have a hard time seeing you make any important decisions affected by that belief. It would be better as a trait or instinct.
Peregrine
11-06-2006, 07:48 PM
Well I can see making important choices. We're out digging up the treasure. I've been assigned to keep watch while the rest of the group is digging the treasure up they're not paying attention to me. I'd have a good chance of killing them and taking the treasure but I wouldn't. I'd be fair. We'd split it up then when we got back to port I'd try to take advantage of them with my gambling skills. Any time I could take advantage of a shipmate but didn't because we were at sea. I see it as a decent belief but your call.
Heck the 2 belief's even conflict with each other. What better way to show my dad then to take all the treasure but that would conflict with my other belief of being fair with my shipmates until we get back to port.

Don't mean to burst your bubble, but chances are as soon as we're ready to dig is when the least amount of trust will be given. I know for a fact Cayitano and am suspecting Vizzini would likely be more than happy to put the rest of the group at sword/knife point to get them to dig up the treasure LOL.

Looking at our beliefs, the most likely way for this game to end is with lots of blood and one person walking away with the treasure. Or no one walking away at all.
Which is exactly how I like it.

Peregrine - Good point... I'm still not sure about it, but keep it. Keep it and see if it works for you, if it does, then more power to you. If not, change it into a trait and pick up another belief. Nothing is written in stone and you other beliefs should definitely propel the game forward.
Hexgunna - Awesome. A quick question - when you awaken the other with prayer, is it actually to your serpent God? I would like for us to play that out, as some sailors might react... oddly to that :)

Btw, the "this will soon require resource rolls" was not intended to stop you guys from having fun with partying as pirates, but rather give you an opportunity to work for it a bit and make a choice :)
Also, we never did make a decision regarding dice... so far I vote we just trust each other. Roll the dice yourself (using dice generator, or the dice on your table, whatever) and post the results.

I'm good with anything. It really depends on if we want you to have creative contol of outcomes, or ourselves. If you roll then we would pose our intent and you write the outcome. If we roll we can just write the overall intent/outcome ourselves for most things

Pirate qualifies as a bandit type lifepath. The rest of you can include that in your steel as well, if you haven't already.

Something I had forgotten: You all start out with 1 persona and 2 fate. Something to get you going.
Also, Darke suggested that I give advantage dice based on descriptions... I might do that occasionally, so I would like to know now: Are people okay with always accepting advantage dice in this game? THen I can just add them on for you. Normally you should have the option of refusing them to get tests, but I think that might be a bit troublesome for a pbp.

TheLHF - You got 6 dice as perception is always open-ended and one die rolled 6, 6, 3.
Also, the extra dice are cash on hand, yes. You can use all both of them or one of them on any test you see fit, does not have to be the next one. Once you use them they are gone.

Would you prefer that I ask rules questions like that here in the OOC thread, or in quote boxes in the IC thread?

Well, it would be nice to keep the quote boxes in the IC thread reasonably small. Use your judgement - if the question is reasonably small and can be easily answered ask it there. If it's a longer question do it here.
Btw guys, I'm writing in the IC thread now, but it's wonderful to check the thread after the weekend and find a bunch of responses :) So far the posting schedule is good.

On a more serious note. Have you seen the new spirit binding rules Hexgunna? Check out the magic burner forum if you haven't.

So, I'm a little worried about this Tizio figured. I failed that Circles roll and got a big ol' Enmity Clause dropped on my head. Only, he's very nice and wants a job. Of course, Vizzini knows none of this. Damn, I love Burning Wheel.
On a related note, I want to Circle myself up the Captain or whoever I would talk to about getting Tizio hired on. I'll wait at least until the current scene is done. Next good break in the action, that's what Vizzini is going to do.

11-14-2006, 03:40 PM
Yes... you really need to get Suasion. You will have to rely on your will a few times to get it though, which I will be looking forward to :)
TheLHF - Keep in mind that I only said that I might have invoked the enmity clause. Maybe he is really an ally that I let you have just to keep you on your toes or maybe not. I guess time will tell.

Alright, it looks like we are ready to shift scenes. Any suggestions?
I know Darke wants to talk to the Captain, but the rest of you might also have something in mind...
You could have a chance to do some individual things, find something to do together, or whatever. I'm kicking things of on monday at the latest, but if I hear from you all before that, I'll get things going before that.
Suicide King
11-16-2006, 06:47 PM
Btw Darke, just to clarify something... I wouldn't have required a roll for you to get out of the bar ordinarily, but since you did roll, I attached some risk to it...
If you had rolled high, I might have had it be the beginning of building a reputation or something like that... dangerous knifefighter could, murderous bastard, something like that. You rolled low and did describe you were picking fights, so I figured a wound was fair.
I need to think on this, determining stakes after the dice are rolled feels very backward for me, and "nothing happens" failure stakes are always boring. Maybe you should just tell me how many dice you have and what your intent is, the I set the stakes and then I roll and narrate... or maybe not. Damnit, I don't know. This is very much a pbp specific issue and I'm not even sure if it really is an issue.
DarkeTwilight

First, you keep getting me and TheLHF mixed up. LOL i may be a cold hearted bastard, but its LHF who plays Vizinni.
Now places for us to go or things to do. Cay sorta wants to kill the one who got away. Sorta make his point loud and clear. But he's content to follow with the crowd, i doubt the body he left will be too long before word gets around about whats happened too him.
ThisIsVictor
11-17-2006, 01:08 AM
SK: I'm cool with letting you set the stakes for most things. On really big things, mostly related to Beliefs and Relationships, a back and forth is good.
So I'm in favor of telling you how many dice I get then you setting stakes and rolling. (Of course, it's pretty geeky to sit here on my computer, roll some dice and then post the results online, but I can get my geek fix other ways.)
How focused do we want to keep the game on the goal? I can think of a number of things for Vizzini to do next, but none of them really focus on the treasure. Do we want a quicker game, with a straight run for the treasure or more time spent exploring our pirate life?
In accordance with his sailors oath, Vizzini wants to get very very very drunk. Anything after that is just fun. We might want to find a new bar and make sure no one is following us, though.

Err... oops. What can I say, I never have been good with names. I'll try and remember it in the future: TheLHF = Vizzini, Darke = Cayitano.
I don't know about the whole stakes thing, let's just continue as we were for now.
I think we'll just use scenes where there is a good chance of conflicts. Stories about drunken partying and mischief are fun, but there aren't really that many interesting conflicts in them... except for maybe the mandatory brawl, but we already had one.
So, Cayitano wants to find the one who got away. Vizzini wants to party all night. Any others?

Alright, so we got a lot of circles work and a lot of party like a pirate... let's see if we can't combine those.
Cayitano and William, I assume those two will combine their circles to find the culprit (using piratecove-wise as linked test, helping rules apply to both that and the circles roll). So far only William's reputation as a good pilot applies (it makes people talk to him, that's high status among sailors).
That will be an Ob 2 piratecove-wise test and an Ob 4 circles test (same station, broad occupation, soon, specific knowledge, anywhere in town).
The rules don't really specify how to track a specific person, but using circles seems appropriate. So the test will be to find someone who knows the guy and can tell you where he is.
Govert will be looking for an occult contact. Both affilitation and reputation within the cult applies.
Circles test wil be Ob 2 (same station, broad occupation, soon, common knowledge, anywhere in town).
Vizzini can also help William and Cayitano, as your circles definitely overlap. Can't help Govert though, his circles are seperate from the rest of you.
Hexgunna - Govert has both Heretical Doctrine and Cultist Doctrine. Wouldn't it make sense to have them become one skill? I mean, as I understand it, your cultist doctrine IS your heretical doctrine. I'd suggest removing cultist doctrine and putting the skill point elsewhere...

Since my cove and circles are both only 1 I'll do the assisting and let Willy boy do the rolling. I'll roll my helping dice and let him add the results.
Pirate Cove: 1
circles: 1
Well seems like I'm no help this time
Peregrine
11-19-2006, 12:45 AM
I want to find the town snitch. That guy who watches who's landing and for the right "price" will tell you what ship they sailed in on.
Let me see if I get this right. So pirate cove wise. I roll my 4 dice for that.
normal dice: 4 open ended dice: 0
shade: x Black Grey White
results: 5, 4, 3, 6 (4 dice rolled)
successes: 3
So I had 3 successes it's an OB2 so I had 1 success over. That means the pirate cove-wise which is the linked test gives me a +1D to my circles test?
Then I roll my circles test with an extra die for my linked test success plus I'm going to burn a fate point to open end the dice so I'll have a chance of actually making this circle.
normal dice: open ended dice: 3
shade: x Black Grey White
results: 1, 6, 5, 2 (4 dice rolled)
successes: 2
lol there's a failed circles test ah well, lets see what we get.

Vizzini, Cayitano and William - That's a routine circles test and a routine piratecove-wise test. Also, it was a challenging circles test for Vizzini to find Tizio.
Govert - That was a routine circles test.
Now this time, I promise the enmity clause will be obvious. Perhaps now we shall have our first DoW and/or Fight!

Well, thanks for letting us know Peregrine, but I don't think that's the only reason why nobody has posted lately.
I think part of the reason is that my latest IC post... sucked. Sucked a lot. Essentially I just posted "a lot of stuff goes on that you can't notice, then nothing happens".
While the whole who's-spotting-whom is good enough, I should have escalated things somehow. Give you something to react to.

Ok, we need this out of the way before we continue:
TheLHF - We do it as a persuasion roll. If you succeed against his will you get your will, the more you fail by, the more harsh conditions I will set. After the roll, the only options you will have are agreeing, walking away or escalating to violence. Be warned though, even if you succeed, he's not just going to hand you the man... the will be conditions no matter what.
I'm going to let Cayitano help you with his intimidate skill and let you add the Relentless reputation to the roll. You get +1 Ob for not having a very strong position and being slightly outnumbered.
I need to know if you are willing to use your charismatic trait on this as well, if you do not succeed.
I'll give Govert and William a chance to react before we continue.

Sorry I've been so busy. I haven't worked less then a 70 hour week since before thanksgiving. Seems someone in upper management thought that switching our main order processing system to a "new shiny improved" system the week before our busiest time of year was a good idea. So I've been trying to learn the new system while keeping it running while it falls flat on it's face. I finally on monday convinced management we needed to switch back to the old system until after the holidays.
Gee and they wonder why we've only done 60% of the projected business so far. The system's been dieing daily.
Long and short of it. I can now say I'll likely be working only 40 hour weeks throught february when they relaunch the new system.

Out of curiosity would it be possible to escalate to a DoW at this point. Our intent something like "No tell us where he is we'll go to him." vs his intent being something like "Come with us and we'll take you to where you can meet him"
Suicide King
12-17-2006, 07:01 PM
Hmm... my instinct says no. THe persuasion test was instead of a DoW. By taking the persuasion route Vizzini went for the route where he would not have to compromise. I'd say that let it ride applies.
You would have to go for something very different to get a DoW or another social test... To try and get him to change Berk's mind on how you are going to meet the guy is impossible, unless you change Berk's or your situation significantly.
It's a little harsh, I might do it different in a tabletop game, but let's fail forward spectacularly.

Alright guys, here is the deal.
I am currently without a place to live and without a job. I am sleeping at my parents and a few other places, but the gist is that my life is not very stable right now.
I plan to resolve this soon, I am fairly optimistic about it, but it also means that I do not have reliable internet access. Sometimes I will have an hour to sit down and send mails, post at forums, etc. Sometimes I will have 4 days without access to internet.
So, I do not feel that I can maintain any kind of posting schedule. I will keep visiting the forums, but I cannot promis to post here more than once a week.
That sucks and it makes it impossible to run this game.
So here is what will happen... I am putting this on hiatus for now, but when I get a more steady lifestyle and, not the least, internet access, I will PM you guys to let you know and hear if you want to start it up again.
Deal?
