for all you game developers out there
i think that it would really be helpful for newbies if you would post a sample gaming session in which most of the game mechanics would be displayed (combat, improving stats, roleplaying over rollplaying)

just my two cents

The Scenario: A Dwarf merchant, his Dwarf bodyguard, and a human Wizard are travelling by sea to deliver something to a Gnome on an island.

The Twist: The ship turns out to be crewed by pirates who want that something.

The Action: The pirate captain offers the PCs a deal - the box in exchange for their lives. The Wizard replies with White Fire and the captain and two of his mates are incinerated, as is a good chunk of the cabin. Most of the pirates escape over the sides to avoid more White Fire, but a couple stay to avenge their beloved captain. A knife fight ensues. During this fight, the Merchant's Knife skill goes up. The Wizard decides that one show of power ought to have been enough. He gives a Intimidating speech (though he lacks the skill.) He actually speaks some good words, so without any dice rolled, I have the pirates kowtow and give him a test towards earning the skill. At the end of the fight, the bloodthirtsy Bodyguard has a change of heart and tries to heal the pirate he just delivered a Traumatic Wound to. He uses his Herbalism of B1. He fails horribly, the pirate dies before the Bodyguard realizes it, and his skill goes up to B2 (he already had a Routine test.)

Summary: You will see this kind of interaction a lot with low LP characters who have skills averaging B3. Skills will go up steadily. When testing Stats for unlearned skills, I often consider the roleplaying over the roll of the dice. And combat? Are you asking for an actual script? There is a good example of a knight versus 3 bandits somewhere... :? Perhaps Abzu knows?
