(Because I always liked the scene in the Illliad where Ajax the Greater filled the broken section of the Greek wall and dared the Trojans to come at him.)

Ajax is the son of a small farmer. He's a huge guy and stubborn. Which is a good things 'cause that's what needed to farm these rocky hills. As a young man he dreamed of being a hero, but he knew his life would be taking over his father's farm. He was popular in the hamlet for a good heart, a friendly nature and a booming bass in the local choir.

Then one day in the woods, Ajax saw the local Lord being set apon by orcs. He had his boar spear with him, and not thinking about it Ajax charged into the small battle. More through luck than skill, he and the Lord managed to kill a couple orcs and escape. As payment, and because he knew he needed to build up his forces, the Lord offered Ajax a place in his service. With some reluctence and some excitment, Ajax joined up.

Of course, that was the last he saw of his Lord. He had saved the Lord's life, but he was just a peasant spearsman. He learned fast though, and his friendlyness and size made him a natural leader. After a few yaers he became a sergeant. But now the orcs are beaten back. He's seen a lot of fighting, and if he ever wants to go back to farming, he needs to do so now. Putting his spear on his shoulder, he's starting the march back home.

Note that he's meant to be rather at loose ends to fit in more easily with other characters. His own personal choice, over the first story arc at least, would be whether to continue as a fighting man or retire. As players we expect the adventuring choice, but who knows ... Now if only I had a game to play him in. :-)

Following up my own post, but I just wanted to say that one reason I like Ajax is that in D&D he's be dull. Basically just 18str and 18con. He isn't vastly more complex in BW, but at least there is something else on his sheet to flesh him out a bit.

True, but if you take out "vastly" the truth comes out: He is more complex. Just enough to give out good hooks for satisfying play.

And the real difference is, you can start him out as the dumb, strong, plodding farm boy, but you can take him whereever you want to go with him after that. He's not locked in to a set behavior.

I don't remember Orcs being part of Greek Mythology.
