View Full Version : Burning Wheel Annual (1): Input Your Suggestions
Hi All,
One of the projects on my plate is to produce a Burning Wheel "Annual". This book will include all of the updates, variants, alternates, additions and errata that we have come up with in the past year. Stuff that has been scattered around the website either as posts or pdfs will be compiled into a single (BW format) book, edited, arted and printed.
As of now, I am planning on including:
Variant Artha rules
Variant Wound Penalties rules
Orc Hatred rules (Blood Sacrifice will be in the Magic Burner)
Von Goten's Predicament
Poisonous Ambition
Black Barbarian LPs
Slave Raider LPs
Lost Atlantean LPs
Dark Elf LPs (yet to be finished)
Please tell me what I am missing and what you'd like to see included. I really do need help with this.
• Please link to relevant threads for errata or additions.
• Please provide errata with page numbers.
• Please feel free to suggest your own work. I can't pay your for your submissions, but you will be credited.
WHAT WILL NOT BE INCLUDED
Nothing that will be published in the Monster Burner or the Magic Burner will be included, such as:
Abstractions
Summoning
Enchanting
Blood Magic
Wolves
Trolls
Spiders
Thank you in advance for your considered input into this necessary and difficult project.

Just a personal prefrence, tis is not a flame or rant.
Loose the VonGotens Predicament.
Though I found it an interesting read, I would feel miffed at having paid money for it.
It is also an introductionary scenario (IMO one scene) and I dare say that those of us willing to spend money on this have no need for this in hard print format.
why such harshness?
It is too short and has too little replay value.
*edited because I stand correctedon the poisonous ambition scenario which is worth money and more importantly showcases BW well enough to be a part of a BW annual

Amm... tell me... when do you plan to publish the monsters and magic burners?
I don't think I'll need anything from this annual, but all the others?
I'm waiting for all the really missing rules!
(off topic - Luke, you didn't answer my private massage yet)

Ok, noted. But remember that this annual is for both sides of the fence: for my veterans it's a handy collection of all the stuff we've come up with that's been scattered every where; for the newcomers it's a quick way to get up to speed without having to dig around. I've got a lot of new material coming, as Fiz pointed out, and I wanted clear off the mantle so we can fill it up again.
So what would you like to see in the annual? How about the Wood Trolls?

Query:
Will the Mount Burner be put into the Monster Burner, or is it something that could be considered for inclusion into the annual? It's not mentioned on your list under either the "yea" or "nay."
Another suggestion: the alternative character sheets. Some purchasers might find themselves with a copy machine and no computer, and would want to use a different character sheet than standard.
I'll paw through the other forums here to see what else I can dig up.

Anything that is not on my list is open for suggestion and discussion: Hence the reason why I started this thread.
Would you like to see the Mount Burner included?

I believe that Van's Predicament should stay in. I don't forsee the annual costing more than the set of books and if that is the case then I don't mind putting 50 cents to a few pages in the annual for a great into game. Even if it's only one scene I think it should be included. (And IMO I much prefer to read things on paper rather than online. And I'd also prefer not to have to print it out if necessary.
I would like to see the Mount Burner in it, but again that's because I don't want to print out all those pages on my printer.

Things I would like to see:
The Poisons appendix
The Mount Burner
All of the collected extra 'official' lifepaths & traits
My own peasant lifepaths
Animal stats, Kublai's or otherwise (unless these are planned as an appendix to the Monster Burner)
The Polearm rule variants
I meant to provide links in this post, but this computer just went fzzzzt. I can't copy and paste or open another browser window, so those will have to wait until I can post again.

wow, I'm a veteran 8)
I would love to see the mount burner.
Don't think my trolls would be appropiate, they are very setting specific. Besides I'm not finished, nor will I probably be in time for the annual.
Glad you like them though.

I think wolfs should be included... Please?
The mount burner should be included. I would like to see that. And alot of the other stuff sattered around the site. Though I'm probably not going to be able to get it 'til Ubercon 4... I hope...

mount burner, pole arm variants, toys for sorcerers (yes I know this falls under the Magic Burner but i keep forgetting they exist) animals stats, new lifepaths, traits, and edited explanations of comabt mechanics. For the combat explanations, it could be something I could give to new players to give a feel for the system in action and what the stats they will choose mean. While I know it's my job to explain sure things but some people like sample gameplay. Almost a Player's Handbook (shudder) section. While I don't like games that make you by a bunch of books just so you can play but a section that speaks to just the player always scores points with me.

Howdy Luke,
By no means forget the Lifepath Creation Guidelines (http://www.burningwheel.org/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=99&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0), the not-Chinese Boxers (http://www.burningwheel.org/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=129&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0), the Duelist (http://www.burningwheel.org/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=81&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0), Pirate (http://www.burningwheel.org/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=80&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0), Privateer (http://www.burningwheel.org/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=79&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0), Barkeep (http://www.burningwheel.org/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=79&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0) (but without the +1 M)*, and Host (http://www.burningwheel.org/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=79&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0) lifepaths, in descending order of my desire.
Had you intended to included a Resources discussion and the Duel of Wits in the Annual, or are they still in alpha?
Regard,
Will
*In response to Kublai's points in the thread under discussion, social contacts are handled by Resources and the bartender's ability with people is handled by a -wise. (Either that, or increase the time.)

I insist on Resources and Duel of Wits if at all possible.

The Resources mechanic works well, now that we've tweaked it through play-testing. As GM, I have to say it's great and I'm considering adding it to my own campaign! 'Cause all in all, I really don't care if you have enough coins to pay for your inn stay.
It's worked like this: If necessary, use a -Wise or something to find the object of desire; Haggle for the price using all skills and FoRKs; and finally roll the Resources Attribute with an Obstacle determined by the results of your Haggling. Examples: a stay at a cheap inn - Obstacle 1. Hiring for a month a hundred mercenaries to act as your bodyguard - Ob 7.

I'd suggest including anything found under the rules expansion setion: Meditation, Fainting as Hesitation, Stunning Blows, Two Fisted Fighting, Jumping, Expanded Intimidation, what the heck, you can read the list as well as i can... i think it should all go in. With the exception of your Not Included list...

Let's not forget the Mook (aka Simplified Combat) Rules.

I'd like to see a quick-reference list for which rolls are open-ended. As it is, it's very confusing to have to flip back and forth between two books hoping to hit on the one page that tells you whether this roll is open-ended or not.

There's tons of things I'd like to see but the big one for me would be: Variant Armor Rules
http://www.burningwheel.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=436
I haven't seen the Dule of Wits rules, and a quick search didn't turn them up. I suspect these would appeal to me a lot, but I'd like to see them before I vote definite yes.

I pointed out an error on the burner worksheet concerning spells and resource costs. I don't think you necessarily need to add a new one to the annual, but I would like an errata page on previously published books (and pdf's maybe?).
Also... if you need filler space sample burned characters would be cool.
Other than that I'd just like to echo what others have said...
Mounts, Rules varients, poisons, lifepaths, animal stats, resources.
I would also really like to second the call for 'edited explanations of comabt mechanics'. Anything to make learning easier on newbie players would be great.
Thanks.
Currently the Annual has more chapters than the Monster burner...

But considering the Monster Burner consists of three Post-Its, some math paper, and a paper clip, that's not saying much!

If you put in the duel of wits rules, you should put The Gift in... granted it's the only BW con scenario I've played, but I think it's awesome!

Lies! All Lies!
I've actually edited 180 some pages of the MB now. And that's only two chapters! This is gonna be one awesome book!
