I was curious what people had decided magic can't do. Is anything beyond the scope of magic in BW. For example the spell Patterner. It recreates cloth from a sample scrap. Why not stone or metal, or anything else for that matter. With enough time and wizards buildings even cities could be created with just magic. Is this beyond the scope for Burning Wheel, best left to games of a different ilk? This isn't a question of rules more of opinion. I know that Abzu's a big fan of the dark and gritty. Is a city that magic built too high fantasyfor BW?

I think Luke "opened the gates" with the release of his Abstraction Chapter. High magic like the kind you describe is now perfectly reasonable. If one was so inclined, making cities from magic is now possible. I like that. At first, Luke was like, "Okay, here is a system that is best used with the kind of worlds I prefer." Then, once this was established, he went on to say, "But here's a way for you to create a world in your own vision."

...what Pete said, but: ...except there should be no Teleportation, Time Control, or Wish-based magic, EVER.

nothing that would break the game in one fell swoop. and all magic should have some kind of precedent or internal logic to it.

but yeah, what Pete said.
