well, as i have not recieved an answer i will tell about my idea for (mechanic) automata creation:
the campaign world i'm planning was shaped by an industrial revolotion which, combined with the fact that in that world magic is much weaker and more limited, led a mage to the following thoght: "what if i would create a clockwork statue that, while winded could walk and then summon and bond a spirit to it as a mind?"
basicly, the process involves # steps:
1. creating the automata physicly (available motivation must be either: steam power, clockwork mechanism or compressed air tank)
2. sumonning a minor nameless spirit (usally one that has something to do with metal)
3. binding the spirit to the body
4. adaptation period (at the end of which the spirit is completely bound and will never return to be a 'normal' nameless spirit)
opinions are wellcome!
hey ronny,
sorry i didn't get back to you on this. somehow i missed the post!
anyway, automata are not currently in the works.
:( Sorry!
However, the enchanting rules are in the works. They should be ready for playtest before GenCon (end of July). I think these will give you a lot of insight into the creation of magical material goods.
thanks for your interest.
"air compressor"?

I love the idea ronnieB
leads to all sorts of great plot hooks...
- the nameless spirit taps into memories of its past life and seeks revenge on those who killed or abandoned it.
- the spirit was the spirit of a rock and the sorcerer must coax it to act contrary to its nature and teach it how to not be a rock.
- the spirit is a powerful elemental that begins to shape and transform the automata to better suite its nature creating the burning clockwork.
- the spirit pines for days of flesh and emotion and runs off to join a rag-tag bunch of cigar smoking adolesents, is lured in by the sorcerer who wishes to transform them all into beasts of burden but escapes, the transformation somehow hindered by his unatural body, he joins a stage show as a marionette but the proprietor only wants to lock him away until only through being reunited with his creator can he be truly alive... although I have a feeling that's been done before.
- and lets not forget the ever important automata lifepaths!! :)
