Traits
I'll finish traits tonight or tomorrow when I get a moment.
Marked by the Wheel of Five
This trait grants a 1D affiliation with the Temple of Abzu and a 1D infamous reputation as a devotee of Abzu, lord of the underworld. The Temple of Abzu -- Keun Bul, Lord Fire -- is feared and treated with suspicion among the priesthood and the common folk. Abzu is seen as a demon lord who comes to collect the dead and burn their souls in his cauldrons. The cauldrons are to purify them of their sins, of course, but still, who wants that?
Regardless, the image of Abzu as a greedy demon is one of folklore. It is not an accurate portrayal of the god, as any devotee of Fire will tell you.
Burned -- Char
This character is marked with a distinctive burn scar.
Nailed to the Wheel of Fire
In order to become a fully vested priest in the religion of Fire, the supplicant must undergo a terrible and arduous ritual. He must hang from a burning wheel for five days with out succor or rest. He must pray that his god preserve and keep him. He must contemplate deeply and truly the meaning of fire and how it relates to his own blood and fate. Should he survive the ritual, he becomes a member of one of the deepest and most powerful mystical religions in the empire.
This trait grants the Priest of Cherry Blossoms an additional Belief relating to the mysteries of Fire and Blood that he discovered while hanging on the Wheel.
Fire is the Breath of Life
Priests of Hearts study the human body and its strengths and weaknesses. One particular aspect that they study is disease and infection. They intimately understand how vulnerable the body is to such things and how impurities can bring on the infections. Therefore, this trait grants an additonal Instinct for the character surrounding cleanliness or disease. The Instinct can be, "Always boil water before drinking." "Always clean my tools in freshly boiled water." "Always wash my hands before eating and surgery."
Fire Creates, Fire Destroys -- C-O
The Priests of Cley claim that their god is the creator -- he of wood, stone and earth. But the Priests of Iron know that Lord Fire is the true creator. It is he that allows man to shape his environs and truly thrive. Fire makes the tools and cooks the food. This trait acts as a call-on for Firebuilding.
Marked by Fire
Faith burns hot in the blood of the Priest of Fire. Master Priests of Fire paint their flesh with the markings of their inner fire -- beautiful black, red and orange tattoos cover their flesh. The Master Priest of Sword channels his faith into a furious, righteous, calm. These tattoos are also written with the sutras of the faith -- prayers of protection and succor. So long as the priest is unadorned by other physical protection (like armor), he gains the protection of 1D of armor to the head, arms and legs and 2D to the chest.
Soulseeker -- Dt
The Priest of Souls learns to look deeply into the souls of men and read them as if their stories were written upon the page. Perception counts as Aura Reading (tests are not open-ended). The character does not need Second Sight or Magesense to use this ability.
Balancer of Scales -- Char
The Priest of Souls believe that it is their role to keep the balance between all four of the great religions. They say, "A fire which burns untended will burn out of control."
Blessed by Fire
This traits grants +1D to Faith for Blessing, Aid and Purification when the prayer ritual involves fire.
Steeped in Incense -- Char
This character is steeped in the rich scent of cherry blossom incense. The smell precedes him where ever he travels.
Keun Bul Adul
I am the Son of Lord Fire. There is only one Great Priest. He is the pinnacle of all of the Temple's greatness and wisdom. This trait grants him +4s in a DoW in any matter regarding the Temple of Abzu, its resources or its personnel.
It also extends the Master of Temple trait to cover all temples, not just his home temple.
This trait is lost should the Great Priest step down from his position or, pray it never happen, he be deposed by the Korukan.
The Religion of Fire
The Religion of Fire is the second of the two outsider cults in the Niraih. Water and Earth are considered traditional and conservative. Wind and Fire are considered as dangerous outsiders. They are prayed to in times of extremity, the supplications to Lord Fire come when fires rage in the hearts of men, when children fall ill and when weather and politics bring fire to the streets of the cities.
The Religion of Fire encompasses the natural sphere of fire itself, but it also includes the hearts of men -- their passions and their health -- as well as the arts of men wrought from fire -- specifically, metal works.
Five is the holy number of Fire, symbolized in the cult's broken wheel symbol. This broken wheel represents the gateway to hell, the imperfection of all of man's works (no matter how useful) and mystical power.
The patron of Fire is Keun Bul, the bursting flames, Lord Fire. He is tpyically portrayed as a demon haloed in fire. Though it is considered very bad luck to show him in corporeal form. More often, his presence is represented by the five-spoked wheel or a pattern of flames. Lord Fire's role is to tend the fires of hell and purify the sins of men.
The role of his priesthood is similar. They guard the hearts and bodies of their people. They are doctors, mentors, guides, artisans and warriors. However, their religious journey is so arduous, they become remote and singular creatures.
The Religion of Fire dispenses with much of the pageantry of the other three great religions. They keep temples and have orders of priests and master priests, but each priest is ultimately allowed to be his own master. Each priest is allowed to seek his own mystical journey.
Men and women ordained to this religion are soft-spoken, solitary creatures who understand the frailty and weakness of men, but who also know how to forge a soul into a weapon and wield it for righteousness.
