I have always enjoyed thieves and dream about the day I can play this guy - a sorcerous thief!

Born in the lower district of the city, Rude was poor from the beginning. He believed his only way out was to resort to crime and so began his life as a small-time thief. Though the payoff was nominal, the thrill of the job was addictive. On his 16th birthday, however, he hit the wrong apartment.

Thinking himself a man, Rude broke in to one of the richer townhouses in the city. It was the home of Showan the Green, a sorcerer of some skill in the service of one of the larger Merchant Lords. Showan caught Rude and considered calling the guards until he sensed that Rude was one of the Gifted. Thinking it was his responsibility to lead this youth onto the proper path, Showan instead made him his apprentice.

Twelve years of strict study and duties weren't enough, unfortunately. Rude never stopped his nightly prowls despite the severe punishments dealt when he was caught. Eventually, Showan decided it was too risky to keep such a larcenous person in his household. People were beginning to talk.

Given some coins and some clothes, Rude was asked to leave. It was a few weeks later that Showan realized that even he was a target of Rude's addiction. One of his shunts had disappeared.

Howdy,

Silent Step: So every success over 2 adds to the Ob of anyone trying to hear you?

Cordially,
Will

It can be interpreted that way, but my intent differs from this in that it is a fixed Obstacle spell. Thus, I can keep the resource cost relatively low at 4, instead of 8 (which would be the cost of your interpretation).

I imagine, then, that this spell would have a fixed result, that being a +4 Obstacle to anyone trying to hear the caster.

Hey Kublai,

So is it a general rule in Abstracting that the bonus/detriment of "flat" spells is twice the Ob of the spell? 'Cause that seems high to me.

Also it was not clear that buying an open or caretted spell cost 4x Ob to me. Is that sort of just the way you guys play, or is that noted somewhere? (Which is cool, btw, but I'll probably suggest to Luke that he add that little nugget to the Annual on the thread over at the Forge.)

Page 31 of the Character Burner has everything you ever wanted to know about purchasing spells with resource points.

The Abstraction chapter lists the cost of individual facets.

The cost of flat spells is Obstacle x2 in resource points.

The cost of carrot spells is Obstacle x4 in resource points.

Spells are quite expensive! :(
