View Full Version : ICON Wrap Up
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came out and supported us at ICON 04, both returning players and new members. You all really made the weekend for me. You rawk.
I think next year we'll need the whole demo room just to run our 30 person version of Poisonous Ambition, don't you?!
;)
I'll be doing a full review of the con over at the Forge shortly, but if you were at our table this past weekend, chime in here. I want to hear from you!

All I have to say is this:
I rocked as the Troll. I conned the Named into giving me a whip, and I used it on the chattel and night seekers like I was born to wield it.
Although, as Thor pointed out, I missed a great opportunity by not whipping the Named in the back as he waged personal combat against the Follower for control of the pitiful remnants of the clan :P

Awesome! I sooo wanna play the Troll in that scenario. I bet I'd be able to take over the clan myself! 8)

Difficult, but it could be done. I wasn't looking to do that myself. My goal was to get a whip, and I got it. My second goal was to try and kill whomever won between Follower and Named, but that didn't come to pass (and not to take over the clan; my goal was to destroy all those who had a whip, so the rest of us would never have to feel the whip again)

The inadvertantly 16-player adventure totally rocked! Betraying the traitors was especially fun.
More seriously, this was my first introduction to BW, and the system is awesome. I am currently reading through the books, and will comment some more about it later on.
Kublai: The poem is by Coleridge. I told you it would bother me until I looked it up. The full text is here: http://www.zyra.org.uk/kublai.htm

Were you the Nightseeker on the Named's side? Cause that was so cool that you actually stayed loyal, even though the Named's side was so outgunned.
BW is definitely starting to grow on me, that's for sure

Yup, that was me. My character's instinct was to always go with the winning side. At the point where I decided to throw in with the Named, I thought it was only the rest of the Night Seekers, the Knower of Secrets, and maybe the Black Hunter that were on the Follower's side. I thought the Wolf Pack was with us. Oops... :)
You were awesome as the Troll, BTW.

Wow, jgalak! Awshum poem! <-- tears of joy
Do you think there is a hint in this poem as to where Kublai was buried? I hear there are fantastic riches to be found in his tomb, but the only people who knew where it was were killed after they buried him. Then, the killers themselves were killed. I think this went on for a couple more times before they felt that his tomb was safe!

Funny enough, it turns out tha the Knower really was on the Named's side! my buddy Thor was gonna help the Named too, until knower. His magic could have helped turn the tide. Damn, that sucks!

Thanks. I had a slow start because no one other than the Named wanted to speak with me, so I started to do a little plotting on my own. I got my whip, which was excellent. Luke, Thor and I were discussing that the next day, and he said that was awesome how I conned the Named into giving me the whip.
You also did a good job as a Nightseeker. In fact, everyone did. The guys playing Nightseekers really stirred things up this time around. It was great how the weakest guys helped to stir the pot!

Hi All,
I had a blast playing a Nightseeker. I began the game with a single goal: to see He Who Bears the Lash dead. I almost succeeded in getting The Follower to take care of him with a judicious lie, but alas, I had to slit his throat in the dark, while no one was looking.
Having played through the scenario twice now, and watched the end of a third, I think it's just fantastic how different players interpret the characters in different ways and adopt different tactics. It doesn't really matter whether you know the "secrets" of the scenario or not -- the other players will always surprise you.
Urbwar was an excellent troll, and really did a lot with his character, even if he let his chance for everlasting glory slip by when the Named attacked.
Kirk was awesome as the Legionnaire, and Quendalon made a perfect vicious and scheming Follower. I didn't catch the name of the guy from Slugfest Games that played the Named, but he was very good too, if slightly too merciful. How can you respect a Named that doesn't inspire abject terror at the very THOUGHT of crossing him. :D

That adventure rocked! :o
I was able to get the Named poisoned (though it didnt do anything) as well as taking his axe and getting a bow with a poisoned arrow to help assassinate him.
I also had him think I was on his side by offering to hunt down people and advice on taking out the humans.
I wonder if its actually possible to get the entire clan together to reunite with the warriors attacking the humans and actually taking out the town?
I was able to get the Named poisoned (though it didnt do anything)
that was you? actually, you made the named and the ebon tyrant very sick... and subsequently got the Legioner in a fucking ton of trouble.

More than trouble Luke; it got him chosen as the next sacrifice to the Knower. I should know, because as the Troll, I dragged him kicking and screaming to the Knower's cave. Even the Troll felt bad, and said "Sorry" before leaving him with the Knower and his eventual fate :P

I didn't play in "Poisonous Ambition", but "The Gift" from sunday afternoon at Icon. It rocked Luke! It rocked. I'm looking foward to convincing the rest of my gaming group (those who didn't play in the scenerio) to start playing the Burning Wheel!

I was there at ICon all weekend running demos (BESM d20) and because of that, I couldn't make it to the actual Burning Wheel games.
I did make it through some arena battles though and had a blast.
I'm currently reading through the books and imagining Luke jumping up and shouting at me or getting all excited at different points
I imagine Luke could very well be the Heidi Fleiss of gamers, what with that huge list of everyone who bought the books... talk about having dirt on someone :D
I can't wait to play in an actual burning wheel game. Its either a testiment to Lukes GMing, Burning Wheel or both, that he could run with 16 players!!! I'm imaginging a Burning Wheel free for all melee taking place and it scares me

Acting as the Legioneer, I had a great time. Thanks again for the game, Luke.
Hey, Mikado, I think there were multiple poisonings. I handed the Named One his first (poisoned) meal, which he bit and then threw to his wolf. Both got very sick, and this eventually led to me cowering before the Named, before being led off to being sacrificed by the Knower of Secrets. My great error - I had set up everybody except the Knower. I had nothing on him. Hence, fed to the Great Darkness!
I think I had everybody else set up. The Bearer of the Lash was supposed to take the fall for the poisoning. I think this is where the second poisoning by Mikado may have caused my doom, as it may have alerted people to posioning. I had told the Whisperer that the Follower was trying to reestablish his old "red Tide" orc clan that the Named had previously destroyed. And of course, had told the Follower that the Whisperer was plotting against him.
The theory was that the Lash would take the fall for poisoning, then Follower and Whisperer would take each other out. My ascension to the right hand of the Named One would be clear!
Didn't quite work. I had done a poor job setting up the Lash (next time get a Night Seeker to give Named One the poisoned food, dammit!), so it got pegged to me. I did plant the posion on the Follower in desperation (quite a trick when cowering under a circle of big orcs) but since everybody had poison, it wasn't that big of a deal. Ah, well. It was fun.
Everybody did a great job. Thor had some sort of Night Seeker spy ring going which I plugged into when I respawned. The troll was having a great time. (Oh, and how the heck did a TROLL get the lash?) And there was a whole other set of plots involved in setting up the Knower which went right by me. To bad the didn't happen soon enough to save me!
And what were the Destroyer and Astride the Beast were up to? It eventually led to the confrontation with the Named (I think).
Favorite role playing moment: Being led away by the Troll to the Knower's cave. My sniveling, whining best!
Actually, I ended up doing a lot of cowering that game. Must have been feeling my "inner orc." :P
Favorite Game Master moment: Luke's growing realization that he was indeed going to run a 16 player adventure. A true hint of madness.
Hey Luke, I thought there was a sequel to this orc adventure. Is one in the works?

That's actually pretty funny. Since it was one of my goals to see He Who Bears the Lash die, when he went down, the Named started to crack.
He ordered me, the Troll, to find out who had put HWBtL down. That's right, he wanted the Troll to interrogate the ones he'd likely eat first, ask questions later. I was tempted to just eat all the Night Seekers, then claim they knew nothing, but I think that would have just made things worse :P
Anyway, I, the Troll, pointed out that if I was going to interrogate people, I would need a lash. Since HWBtL was lying on the ground, unconcious, the Named told me to take it. So I did, and the rest is history
BTW, you were great as the Legioneer, and later as a Night Seeker. I must have abused your characters alot during the game, though you might not remember the Troll saying "Sorry" as he took the legioneer to the Knower. Even a dim witted Troll knows that's a fate worse than being eaten by said Troll :P

Don's (eruditus) got some crazy idea how to turn this into a campaign. I have no clue what he's up to. You should ask him.
oh, and welcome aboard, kirkland! you were a joy to watch in play. much much fun.

One of the first things I did was to get as many people as I could to poison the Named. After that, I spent most of the time aquiering weapons. It was a stroke of luck that the Named threw his axe. My oppinion is by getting the axe was one of the main reason why our side won. The other being we had two thirds of the camp on our side. The wierd thing was no one (on the Named side) to my knowledge figured me to be a traitor to the Named.
Sunday rocked too. I accomplished almost everything I wanted too. The only thing that sucked was I died... But that only helped in the end, the Elves got to leave with the princes armor and they got a peace treaty.

That's why I wasn't able to grab it. :x

I had a great time as the Whisperer, despite the damper my voicelessness put into my roleplaying. Thanks to Luke for designing and running such a great game, and all the players who made it the experience it was.
Pettifogger, sorry, but I just needed the Follower too much for my own plans, and didn't trust you enough, to actively set him up. Although that medallion you handed me was a great trick.
Oh, and thanks. Your misfortune and attempt to pin it all on the Follower gave me the opportunity I needed to set up the Knower. Don't know if I could have done it without you.
Paranoia instincts came into play a lot more than I'd expected. If you told the Named something horrible had happened, your explanation for how, and your recommended course of action, he was likely to go with it. At least it worked like that for me...
