And away we go.

Initial color:
Moisture glistened on the cobblestone, reflecting the many lanterns hanging from the second stories of the houses and shops that crowded the Alley of Bones as Bohemond waited for his mark to appear. The War of the Races was over and the dwarven prince had came to the Eternal City to write the peace, but he had made many enemies in the course of the war. Personal enemies. One such had hired the duellist to make sure that Prince Arben did not live to enjoy his laurels.

Bohemond heard the dwarf's sturdy shoes echoing off the paving and the duellist stepped out into the street as his prey rounded the corner. "My lord. You dwarves waddle like ducks when you walk!" he shouted while cocking the hammer of his pistol. "I wonder, do they also quack? Stand to, sirrah. You'll not be going home this evening."

Yagathai

"Pardon me, sir, but do you mean..." Arben's eyes widened as he realized just what was going on. His axe and shield were instantly in his hands. "Assassin! Assassin! To me! To me!"

So you'll be using your pistol to position vs. my axe? Although technically according to the rules I could use the axe as a throwing weapon in IP even though I have no intention of using it as such, I did promise no wacky positioning shenanigans. You have the weapon length die and the speed multiplier die, and we tie at Reflexes. So that's... 7D for you and 5D for me, yes?

TimP

Bohemond quickly glanced around looking for whom the dwarf might be calling "Indeed they DO quack. And quite loudly, too!"

Yes, that all sounds right, to me.

Initial Positioning: 2, 5, 3, 4, 2, 1, 6 (3s) Curses!

Yagathai
02-23-2007, 03:17 PM
My initial positioning:

Roll 1: 4, 2, 5, 1, 2 = 2 successes. It's yours. What range?

TimP
02-23-2007, 03:25 PM
Outside striking distance.

Yagathai

Exch. 1, Volley 1 positioning:

Roll 1: 4, 3, 2, 4, 2 = 2 successes. All yours.

V1 A1: Close, Use Mask - FAILED
V1 A2: Avoid - DOESN'T MATTER

Like some sort of monster from the depths, Arben's masked visage twisted into something foul and terrible.

TimP
02-23-2007, 03:38 PM
My Steel Check for the mask: 2, 3, 4, 6, 5, 2 (3s) Open ending the 6 gives me, another 6 for (4s). That meets my Hesitation with the Fearless Trait. No result.

The dwarf's cries are muffled as he drops a fabled Dwarven Forge Mask over his face. Bohemond squints "That will do you no good, here. I've looked death in the eye, up close and personal, no ghoulish party mask is going to phase me! Look to your defense, sir!"

Yagathai
02-23-2007, 03:42 PM
OK. My Avoid doesn't oppose your Aim, so next exchange, then.

Exch. 1, Volley 2 positioning: Close
Roll 1: 6, 2, 5, 2, 3 = 2 successes. The dice are killin' me here!

V2 A2: Close, Avoid -- NOT ROLLED AGAINST SHOOTIN'.
V2 A2: Block/Strike -- OUT OF RANGE

A shot whizzed over Arben's head. "Terribly unsporting, you cad!" he shouted.

TimP
02-23-2007, 03:47 PM
E1, V2 Maintain 2, 5, 1, 2, 5, 3, 3 (2s) That's a tie, so no change in positioning.

A1 Shoot 4, 3, 3, 4, 4: 3 successes vs. ob 2. That's a hit, unless you avoid.

Yagathai
02-23-2007, 03:50 PM
Where's your Volley 2 and 3?

Also, I'm closing, i've Avoided this volley, and you're Maintaining. Each of those are a +1 Ob. You'd need 4 successes to hit.

But even before your shootin' roll, there's that pesky gunpowder die. You misfire on a 1.

TimP
02-23-2007, 03:54 PM
Ok, so I missed you, then.

Gunpowder Die: Roll 1: 2

*whew*

Sorry about forgetting to post V2 and V3. I didn't change 'em, promise! They're up, now.

Yagathai
02-23-2007, 03:59 PM
De nada. Obviously, my Block/Strike is pointless, so onto V3: Chaaaaaarge!

I get 6D Power + 1D closing on a previous round + 1D for Charge + weapon length bonus = 9D

Roll 1: 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 5 = 1 successes! Son of a bitch!

I'm hesitating the first action of next exchange, and we start on the Outside unless you roll 0 successes on 6 dice.

V3 A1: Close, Charge -- FAILED

TimP
02-23-2007, 04:02 PM
Nope. 1,4,3,2,5,5, is my Maintain Positioning.
My sword is halfway out of its scabbard as we start Exchange 2. You lucky dog!

Exch. 2, Volley 1 Positioning (Close)

Roll 1: 2, 2, 3, 6, 2, 1 = 1 success. You lucky, lucky son of a bitch...

Obviously, once again Block/Strike doesn't go off.

Arben couldn't see his opponent. Where was he? He swung wildly in the air behind him. No, not there.

V1 A1: Close, Stand & Drool
V1 A2: Block/Strike -- OUT OF RANGE

Yagathai
02-23-2007, 04:16 PM
Exchange 2, Volley 2 Positioning/Charge

My usual 8D:

Roll 1: 3, 6, 4, 2, 1, 6, 3, 5 = 4 successes.

V2 A1: Close, Charge -- FAILED
V2 A2: Set CHANGED TO Stand & Drool

Again Arben charged in, and again his foe somehow disappeared. Where was he?

TimP
02-23-2007, 04:20 PM
Exchange 2, V2
Maintain 6, 4, 5, 2, 3, 5 (4s) bwahaaahahah!
a1 Draw Dagger
a2 Set

The dwarf charges in, yet again, but Bohemond slips to the side, his leather boots softly dragging across the cobblestones as he frees his dagger and raises his sword into a high stance

Yagathai
02-23-2007, 04:24 PM
I hesitate and lose my Set, which means I also lose my Great Strike, which means that I'm essentially hesitating for the rest of the exchange. Do your stuff.

TimP
02-23-2007, 04:26 PM
Exchange 2, Volley 3
Close 1, 2, 2, 1, 3, 2 (0 successses!)
Disarm: 4, 2, 1, 6, 3, 5, 6, 3 (4s) not even close!

Bohemond rushes the prince, kicking at that worthy's knee while attempting to catch his axe with sword and dagger and wrench it from his grasp! Unfortunately, the prince, in his rage, has charged right past the duelist putting the axe on the far side of his body, and out of reach of Bohemond's move

Exchange 3:

Volley 3

a1 set
a2 great strike

Yagathai
02-23-2007, 04:45 PM
Positioning is pointless, since you counter-Maintained, so my feint goes off against your Block/Strike. You get the Strike half, but not the Block half.

Rolling 6 Axe + 1 Knife + 1 Boxing + 1 Dwarven Weapon Die = 9D

Roll 1: 6, 2, 2, 4, 3, 5, 2, 3, 4 = 4 successes. No Ob penalties, so that's a Mark hit. B9.

Dancing like a prizefighter, Arben spun in as if to attack his assailant's off-hand, but it was all a ruse. As soon as the parrying dagger was out of position, Arben reversed the momentum of his swing and sent his blade crashing into...

What do you have on offer, Tim? FYI, I'm offering my chest.

V1 A1: Maintain, Feint

TimP
02-23-2007, 04:55 PM
v1 a1, Maintain, Strike/Block (3/3)

Strike/Block with weapons dice split at 3/3. FoRK of Brawling into Strike portion. No need to roll the Block, as Feint beats it: so....Strike 6, 2, 4, 5 (3s). I'll spend 1 success to move the Strike to your arm.

My chest is on offer, Yag. I'll be rolling 4 armor dice vs. ob 3 (your axe is va2, right?)

Bohemond finds himself in dire straits, as Lord Arben's axe crunches into his ribs after feinting past the duelist's defense. Even as the blow knocks the wind from him, Bohemond strikes out at the dwarf's arm, hoping to pink and weaken him.

TimP
02-23-2007, 04:59 PM
My armor roll is 1, 3, 5, 1. Only one success, plus I lose a point of armor. Bad news!!!

Yagathai
02-23-2007, 05:03 PM
Fair enough. Yeah, VA 2.

Rolling my 4 grey armor dice against an Ob 2, yes?

Roll 1: 4, 4, 2, 4 3 successes. Ptow!

... into his opponent's chest. The assassin's blade scraped off of Arben's arm as ineffectively as if the sword was made of Muffy Slogin's crepe-paper wedding invitations. Arben felt a surge of satisfaction.

You take a B9 to the chest.

TimP
02-23-2007, 05:06 PM
argghhh! you got me. Do the honors!

Brilliant Feint, by the way!

Yagathai
02-23-2007, 05:12 PM
Thank you. It's very often effective against those with 2FT training.

Arben unstuck his axe from his opponent's ribcage and watched as the human teetered and collapsed as if he were a felled tree.

"Still got it," he said smugly to nobody in particular. He finished the downed assassin with a decisive chop, then walked over to where the man's gun lay. He scooped it up with the edge of his shield, flipped it up into the air and smashed it to smithereens with a single blow of his axe.

"Bloody awful things, guns. Terribly unsporting. Terribly."
