Odette Bêcheur, Librarian
Twenty Six years ago it was that Tugdual, then responsible for
the upkeep of the stacks in the northern wing of the High
Library, heard what he thought was the mewling of a cat somewhere
outside. Most likely it was another stray digging into the
Library's kitchen midden, which sat too near the north wing to
please Tugdual's sensitive nose. Not keen on caterwauling sure
to follow, he picked up a handy lead doorstop and stepped
outside, prepared to let fly. It was in mid throw that he
realized that the mewling was at his feet, not a cat, but an
infant!
Well! The event could have been a problem for Tugdual and the
rest of the dour and dusty troop of librarians. However,
although cats were not in good odor with the Librarian community,
dogs were, and just days before Tugdual's much beloved bulldog,
Odette, had passed away. This hole in his heart was to be filled
by the infant he had found on his doorstep. He named her Odette
as well.
The child, Odette, grew up among the massive and cluttered stacks
of the High Library, repository of all the history of the vast
city that bustled and clamored beneath the cliffs upon which the
Library rested. Tugdual adored her and the rest of the community
sooned learned to love her as well, or at least tolerate her
impetuous presence. Her love of reading and of all things
related to the pomp and traditions of the library helped endear
her to most. She learned to read when she was three and had a
capacious grasp of the organization of the Library (if you could
call it that) by the time she was ten. Before long she was being
consulted by even the head librarians in aid of tracking down a
tome or tomes related to a topic.
In addition to having the run of the Libarary, Odette would often
visit the city below, sneaking out on her own at night as often
as going down with the Library's provisioner to stock up on the
necessities of library life.
She joined the official ranks of the Library at the unheard of
age of sixteen, apprenticing under her foster father Tugdual, but
soon getting her own assignment.
These days she is well regarded within the Library, if not the
city that has its eyes turned toward the sea and the world
beyond, not back towards the squat demesne of mouldering tomes.
Odette is now condsidered expert in the history of the city and
the library itself. Rare is the time that she cannot come up
with a relevant volume for any request. Her reach has expanded
beyond the stacks of the High Library as well. She regularly
employs the grizzled peddler, Delmar LeSale, to dig up books and
journals from various rundown parts of the city. He'll bring in
his own finds now and then, as well. She has on more than one
occasion found important items for the various sorcerors of the
city, and is held in high regard by the two antagonistic
sorcerous factions down below.
Odette is only just starting to come into the full blossom of her
talents. She is currently starting to collect notes on what she
intends to become a five volume history of the city. When she is
not working for a client or seeing to her own studies, she is
often seen taking long walks through the city with her beloved
canine companion, Ancel, a huge black beast of a great dane.

(I did, actually, lose the fancy text writeup for Khaz. I still have the scrawled notes, though.)
It's a story of gold, and steel, and stone. If the humans hadn't offered so much gold, none of this would have happened.
The head of a human noble house -we don't name names here, it's a matter of honor- entered negotiations with the dwarven Clan: gold to the weight of a small boy, for a sword that would last generations (well, HUMAN generations.) Half the gold was paid, and the contract was entered into. After years of fire and hammer, the sword was done, finer steel than any human could create. That's when our hero enters the story. . . walking behind the delivery wagon. The dwarf was a fourth son- not for him the ways of the Host, not for him the hallowed forges. Fourth son watches the ox and the cart. Fourth son goes out in the sun and the rain, wind and weather, the men and the bugs. Fourth son better not lose the sword. Not that he complained, out loud anyway.
And there was a problem with the delivery. The contract wasn't with the king, or whatever they called that nobleman- dwarven contracts are with the family, because humans go through a generation while dwarves are on a coffee break. So the king was dead, that wasn't the problem. The problem was that someone else was king now, and there was only the surviving daughter. That wasn't the problem either.
The problem was getting paid. Because the daughter doesn't control the treasury, it's this other human, who was holding her hostage. And if you cancel the contract you have to give the gold back, and who wants to tell the clan chief that he has to give the gold back? So there was an a discussion, between the carter and his apprentice, a discussion of human titles and positions and wards and hostages . After a week or two, the apprentice managed to get his point across. Let him, the apprentice, have a few years, try and fulfill the contract, and then we can see where things went from there. Because this is a lot of gold to just walk away from. The last thing the carter said, of course, was "Don't lose that sword!"
So the apprentice went to live in the human lands, called himself Khaz, took a look around. If this girl was running the place again, king or queen or whatever they want to call it, she could fulfill the contract. So Khaz decided to take a few years and plan a revolution.
This girl, this heir, this hostage is in a castle. Castles need food, carts carry food, he already knows how to load a cart. He's learning the castle, learning to climb walls and sneak around and use this sword -he's already holding onto it all day every day, he might as well learn to use the thing. He's found a place to take the girl if he breaks her out, a guy who might have an army. She's turning thirteen soon, and there's going to be a wedding, so his last five years of planning better pay off.
