View Full Version : Print on demand?

(I did a cursory search of the forums and I don't think this has been addressed before to my surprise but if it has I apologize...)

Luke,
have you ever considered doing print on demand versions (a-la lulu.com for example) of the previous 'summer specials' like Under a Serpent Sun or Burning Sands: Jihad? I know the material is available for free on the wiki, but I for one would gladly pay for a bound paper copy. I like pdf's for searching when I am at home alone preparing for a game but nothing beats having a physical copy on hand when it comes time to game at the table.

I unfortunately missed out on these when the print versions were available before & I don't think I can be the only one who did and would be willing to pay for a bound copy of them (please feel free to chime in if there *is* anyone else like me out there). POD via lulu.com seems to work for other indie game writers (for example Dennis Detwiller & Greg Stolze) and while my understanding of it is not perfect or complete they seem to claim there is no initial start up costs etc.

Just wondering,

1) We do short limited runs of stuff fairly frequently. Get it while it's hot.

2) I'll bring things back in print (in different forms) according to demand and resources.

3) I will not use a service like Lulu.

Whew, someone else asked. I probably would have earlier, but I'd heard an interview with Luke where he refered to himself as a 'print queen'; figured he prolly had some beef with POD or digital printing.

One of the indie game devs mentioned actually being employed by LuLu.com, perhaps that's why so many indie devs have product there.

I think it's more that most indie guys don't want to muck with distribution of any stripe.

Well, if you decide to print Under a Serpent Sun or Path of Spite again, count me in.

UASS was really beautiful. It was our first full color book!

I lost at least $1000 thanks to my distributor, so were I ever to return to "the business," especially on a hobby level, I would absolutely use POD. Especially since the quality is so much better these days than it was, say, 5 years ago.

I think, however, that a five-year collection of re-formatted "summer specials" all in one book or something along those lines would be a neat thing eventually. But I don't blame Luke, with his marketing strategy, to avoid POD.

As a follow up to this, is it acceptable for us to take the PDFs of UASS and PoS to say, Kinko's, and have them print/bind up a copy? I know I could physically do it, but if Luke is against that sort of thing, I won't. I just happen to prefer printed versions, so I was going to DIY.

Abzu?

I have no problem with that. Isn't that what PDFs are for?

If you start mass producing them in China, I'll sick 4H on ya. But otherwise, personal use for you and your group is what it's all about.
