BWHQ is off to Gencon on a lazy morning flight out to Indianapolis.

We'll be checking in when we can, because we can't get enough of you!

Be good while we're gone.
See on Monday,

Let's burn this place to the ground. I'll start. Pick one:

So what's up with that Dancey blog, huh? Clueless dickhead or martyr to the story game cause?

or

D&D 4E will be the straw that broke Hasbro's back, and the company will yet again be on the auction block by Xmas 08, latest.

Oh god. Let's not let the clusterfrag that is the Dancey blog debate infect this joint.

DnD 4Evar (http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/11123.html)

"Marketing support will initially focus on migrating the existing player base, and then move to an acquisition strategy to re-activate lapsed players and acquire new ones. Midnight launch parties will be used to kick off sales of the first new release in May."

I mean, I enjoy DnD and I know what that paragraph means, but something about the word choice there just makes me cringe.

I found the Studio Ghibli banner advertisement to be much more exciting that the article itself.

Let's look at the facts:

- Luke has been working on a semi-secret project with Jared Sorenson for some time now
- He's been making semi-frequent trips to Seattle
- Wizards is in Seattle
- Wizards is announcing something abotu D&D and "4" in 2 hours at GenCon
- Luke is at GenCon!

Do the math, people!

Oh dear God, if only that were true. If only "they" would listen to "us".

What, you don't want to be an acquired asset?

They're coming for me. Sweet mother of Christ. I knew I'd never get out. I knew they'd come for me some day. The Black WotC helicopters are coming for me... AND FOR ALL OF YOU!

I sense a Grey Ranks conversion.

Wait, does that mean you are a new player to be acquired, or a lapsed one to be re-activated?

Personally, I'm in need of some re-activation.

1 + 1 = Luke Crane has been feeding the bug powder to Jared Sorensen. During these crazy trips, Jared has been writing the manuscripts for D&D4, and Luke has been taking these drug-fueled gems of pure game fury and trading them to WotC for cold, hard cash! Where else did he get the funds to make the new book? Does Jared even suspect that Luke, of all people, is behind these blocks of missing time? Or has he been writing them off as a simple side-effect of excessive Absinth consumption while in the company of transsexual prostitutes? Has Luke been able to maintain his cover long enough to extract the full horror of this new "revision" of the classic game from Jared's arachnid-haunted psychotic hallucinations?

And if he has - can the human mind even withstand such a mind-twisting conception?!?

While that would be both amazing and fearsome, based on Luke's reactions during the PAX "Future of Tabletop" panel I can say for sure that it isn't true. Plus I have laid eyes on the secret project that they are working on and while it isn't 4th ed D&D it is totally sexy. Though I am as in the dark as the rest of you re: the people who Luke has been talking to.

What are the stat/age blocks for Gnomes?

Also, those trait lines should have 1 pt each.

Hot!

Gnome LP gives only one skill point, but at the same time has so many awesome survival in the far north skills to chose from.

Choose wisely!

It's hard to be a gnome, also we need Leopard Seal stats!

And the age blocks are such that you'll never get them.

It's hard to be a gnome, also we need Leopard Seal stats!

Stats around G8* plus Kill and Eat Gnome G7, along with the Teeth of Cleansing trait (grey damage to gnomes and penguins, white shade to any horrible Sorensen ideas like armored walruses or "war gnomes"). Full burn pending some free time.

Age blocks and resource table still in progress.

* This represents not only the comparative badassitude of leopard seals, but also the fact that killing gnomes is an inherently heroic act.

Nobody loves gnomes anymore. Warhammer ditched them, DnD humiliated them with ridiculous art, and over here they are constantly berated! You all act like gnomes stole your lunchmoney or something.

I seem to recall seeing a gnome lifepath somewhere other than here before but I cannot find it now. I am looking for the guh-nome and halfling as either a lifepath or as critters in my upcoming Burning Wheel game.

Did you know that "Carnamagos" means "meat wizard?"

hellbender
09-01-2007, 06:44 PM
Sounds like you are trying to derail my rant there, obviously you have suffered from abuse by gnomes as well.

The quote comes from one of my favorite writers, Clark Ashton Smith, so you can blame him for Carnamagos, and for enhancing my vocabulary, he dropped out of school at an early age and one of his amazing feats was reading the Oxford English Dictionary page for page, as well as various sets of encyclopedias and teaching himself French and Spanish. Lovecraft, Leiber, Ellison and REH among others praised his writing highly. Vance took the dying earth genre and ran with it, although I will always like Smith's Zothique cycle over Vance's writing. Gygax and I got into a heated argument on ENWorld and the Troll Lord messageboards over who was the better writer.

Somewhat related to that...

One of the aspects of the Burning Wheel books that I enjoy is the fact that there is a great range of vocabulary in the writing, whereas many rpg books are written with a, shall I say, modest range of verbage. This also makes me wonder how many of my players are going to stick and how many college professors I will need to recruit.

Don't threadcrap your gnome-love into my GNOMEWORLD derail. GNOMEWORLD is about gnomes as they truly are (pathetic and futile, not to mention smelly) not as you wish they were.

(I am joking, of course. If Colin and I get momentum on this we'll copy over what we need to a new thread or ask an admin to move it, so feel free to joke around or talk about whatever comes to mind.)

You could burn gnomes and halflings easily. Do you have the monster burner? Halflings, at least, could easily just use the Lifepaths of Men, probably mainly in the villages and towns. Gnomes might need to be fancier, depending on what kind of gnome you want. D&D gnomes would have all kinds of silliness happening, more folktale-y ones would be one-off monster burns rather than stock, prolly.

I had done a search a couple of days ago and saw a few attempts at a gnome lifepath yet I still cannot find the one that I had spied earlier.

The gnome that I hope to have inhabit my Burning world is part oldschool D&D and part older literature. I do have the Monster Burner and I should look into burning gnomes, I was just hoping that there were already a few of the rascals about.

Maybe I should subliminally include a couple of gnomes in my spot art for the Burning THAC0 manual. Who would know?

I've sent Devin what I burned up for the Leopard Seal. It's lacking traits and opened/advanced skills, but it is a truely heroic beast!

EDIT:
Since Devin hasn't posted it yet, you'll be seeing that and hopefully a stat/age block for gnomes as well. I'm taking my copy of the monbu to LA for my trip so hopefully I'll get some stuff hammered out while I'm down there.

Back in the days of BW Classic, I began creating Gnomish LPs focusing on their tinkering tendencies. I had all the settings broken down, but I never actually did the LPs. I did do a good trait list, though!

Go gnomes!
