Background Setting: Consider a highly spiritual and earth centered relgious area, such as North Africa, recently overrun by a unified religious culture, such as Islam. Although the indigenous populace had strong social structures and an organized society, the newcomers came with horses and lots of troops. The new culture highly discourages the old religion, but isn't going as far as "convert or die" mentality.

Oshubeymi

Born to the city of Ogbo, Oshu was raised as a carver of sacred images. His youth was spent making statuettes of clay, and performing the necessary sacrifices and offerings to empower them with blessings. When the outsiders took over, his workshop was destroyed, and his mentor imprisoned. Oshu decided to travel the land, seeking out the old masters of the old ways, and to try to gather the knowledge of the past. It has not been an easy journey, and it appears to just have begun....

Oshubeymi's skills are the bits and pieces he's picked up from seeking out and associating with the elders. Through Herbalism and good dieting, he's kept his Forte very high.

Hi,

Yeah, one thing I almost insist on is always making sure a character has some form of goals right off the bat. While he doesn't have any ties and is pretty much a wanderer, he's looking for folks and that provides both a "hook" the GM can use plus an excuse for character interaction.

Plus he already has built in enemies for conflict. :)

with his second belief "Between yourself and God..." shouldn't his Faith be one point higher? That sounds like a "correct answer" to faith question number 2: "When in danger whom do you consult for aid."

How did you answer his Faith questions?

Hi,

I didn't realize that the questions necessarily translated directly into extra Faith. I figured something along the lines of "one question yes = bare minimum to have Faith, 2 questions yes = Faith at 5, and 3 questions yes = Faith at 6"...

But hey, if its legal, I'll take it.

Sorry to bug you again, but this is just an example of where things are just a bit vague for me.

Anyhow, onto a bit more insight into Oshu as a character concept-

So you've got this young man who's been trained in the traditional religion, basically an apprentice, given an important task, but still before full teaching of the mystical aspects, when the invading culture enters and begins to rip up the traditional society. The younger shaman types are probably immediately identified and killed, along with anyone who has political power to go with their mystic training.

Some of the older folks manage to escape the Pogrom, mostly those who are recluses, or retired from the social arena, or appear to be too old or out of the way to really pose a threat. Oshu is questing to find these people and preserve the old ways of his people. He's on a quest to gather the wisdom of his people and pass it on to the next generation.

Because his traditional path of training has been disrupted, you can see that his skills are pretty narrow, and somewhat lacking for a man his age. Nonetheless, his History score will rise as he seeks out these elders, and his knowledge of the culture will probably make him an enemy to the invaders and a hero to the rebels.

I wouldn't worry about his "lack" of skills. In fact, I think he has a perfect amount of skills for a beginning PC. It is my experience that "adventuring" skills such as Stealthy, Martial Skills, Inconspicuous, etc. will develop rapidly during gameplay. It's best to begin with a character that has other, harder to earn Skills like Doctrine or Sculpture.

Hi Kublai,

I'm not really worried about adventuring skills, I'm simply referring in comparison to the other sorts of things you get usually by age 24, both Artist and Pilgrim are light on the Skillpoints and the range of skills to choose from, so he's not really fully equipped to function in society for his age, plus with his profession being outlawed, he's also marginalized on another level.

It's not different than the folks who used to cast typeface in lead, they are being pushed out of publishing in our day and age.

Which isn't to say this doesn't fit the character concept at all... :)
