Here is my first real burned character and my attempt at the hometown boy turned hero.

Elias grew up a child of peasant stock in the town of Drummelberg and was raised by his mother and his older brother. In the months before his birth his father was conscripted into the Reeves militia in an effort to help quell Orcan raiding that had sprung up in the surrounding lands. Never having had the benefit of a father's guidance Elias would imagine the grand deeds his father, based on stories his brother had told him at a young age. It was in these formative years that Elias decided that one day he'd be a "great knight" and take up his father's legacy. Thus he would practice with his father's sword and spear, both quite rusted and of inferior quality, whenever he had a spare moment. A big lad to begin with Elias took to sword work early on and the rigors of his self-imposed training hardened him and strengthened his muscles.

By the time he was 9 he looked the part of a boy of 13 or 14 and as such when Sir Garrik the Reeve came by the village in search of ablebodied men to fight off a goblin horde that was approaching Elias snuck away from home with his ill-fitting armor and old equipment to join up. Needing as many "men" who were willing the Reeve asked no questions about his youthful looks given his size.

Fighting alongside his fellow peasants, Elias actually proved to be a superior swordman than many and caught the eye of Garrik the Reeve. He showed uncommon skill and valor for his low birth and Sir Garrik soon took him on with his regulars. Within this group of hardened warriors Elis soon became known as the "Barley Knight" as a testament to the incongruity of his low upbringing and high purpose. Elias began to look up to the stalwart knight and Garrik soon realized within the boy an unusual potential. This potential was to shine through during a particularly harrowing ranging near the eastern fens.

Ambushed by a group of goblins, Garrik's bannerman and some of Elias' fellow footman were cut off from the main body of their warband. With only the treacherous fens at their backs their was no escape and thus the men were forced to fight to the last man. The goblins, smelling victory, pressed on with vicious glee sounding their horns in exultation as they slaughtered their prey. Soon many of Garrik's bannermen and near all of his footmen had fallen beneath the goblin's rank blades and yet each man fought on bravely knowing the this day would be their last. However, the tumult of the battle and horns caught the attention of the main body of the warband. Unexpectedly reinforcements streamed in and took the goblins from behind. Soon the hunters became the prey.

When all was said and done most of the goblins had been slain, but not before they had wreck havoc upon Garrik's men. During the battle Elias had been grievously wounded when he along with several other men stood fast to protect their captain. So impressed was Sir Garrik by Elias' courage that he promoted him to the ranks of his bannermen, under which he has faithfully served these past three years.

Hey Fal,

Don't forget your Beliefs and Instincts. Those are some of the best parts! :D Give 'em to us.

Yep, I forgot those. Here is what I have so far. :)

How'd you get such high Mental Stats? A child that young would have no more than 7 mental points, and I don't see any lifepaths that grant bonus Mental points.

Oops, my bad, I read Child Prodigy wrong. I thought it gave +2 Perception or Will and a shift in a skill. Let me edit that.

Oops, hey, one mistake in my first real attempt at burning a character isn't bad. 8) He's a pretty damn good 3 LP character too, at least from what I can tell.

He's rock solid! He's better than most goblins and orcs! :D

Thanks. How fast do you think Sgt. Greene would take him out? :P

1 Volley.

Really, why so little time? Is it the lower mortal wound/steal and higher hesitation? Or is it something else? I'm curious, because while I understand the theory behind BW my practical experience is extremely limited (2 brief games).

I'm just shit-talking, Falgrim!

I think the only edge I have is experience. Using the FoRK rules, we'd be rolling the same amount of dice, though you would have a distinct advantage with the grey skill. Our Reflexes is the same but I edge you out in Steel/Hesitation.

We could swap characters after the initial challenge and I'll show you that your guy is a champ.

To hazard a guess: Greene has a whole bunch of skills that he can FoRK into combat. Also, you DIDN"T BUY ARMOR! :P

Armor Training is great. But it doesn't do jack for you if you don't have the armor to wear.

Ahhhhh. I see.

Yeah, they seemed pretty close overall. And the Gray skill is very nice, but your guy seems harder to kill and of course your higher resources afford you such luxuries as armor. :P Heh heh.

We could swap characters after the initial challenge and I'll show you that your guy is a champ.

Nice. a shit talking compliment. Real nice.

Good point, Thor!

He's a great campaign character, but even in his history you mention his father's armor. I'd purchase poor quality chain! Also, when you buy arms, you get a weapon for each skill you have. So with one purchase, Barley would get a sword, knife, and spear.

A shield would also be real handy! Personally, since Greene seems to be a focused sword and shield fighter, I would have your guy focus on the spear (the sword is still good for a FoRK though). The spear also makes better sense for a foot soldier.

With a spear and a shield, you could force Greene to stay three paces away from you (giving him a +1 Ob on every strike since he'll have to lunge, and also preventing him from using hilt strikes on you). The sword is a slow weapon, which means that Greene wouldn't be able to strike in consecutive actions. Meanwhile, the spear is a Fast weapon, meaning you could go to town, if necessary.

He can try to charge you or get inside, but your Speed is equal to his Power, so it should be an even match there.

So his resources should look more like this then:
Arms (poor quality), Chainmail (Poor Quality), Clothes, Travel Gear, Shoes, Minor Contact (Sir Garrik)

Careful with the poor arms... they increase all melee Obstacles by one. Though, it's a fantastic angle on your supernaturally talented swordsman!

Thanks, and besides I wouldn't be able to afford anything else unless I were naked  , and the contact fits in with his story.

Damn, now I want to play him. :(
