Well, I ought to be cleaning my apartment (or sleeping), but no, I'm burning characters.

I've had the game for about a year now, and I've read through it several times, but I hadn't gotten around to burning any characters because, well, Real Life has kept me busy.

So, my first shot.

Background:

Born to a knight and a lady-in-waiting, Lyria grew up living in a castle, surrounded by the trappings of wealth and privilege, as well as the children of other minor nobles.

Always a strange child, her visiting Aunt recognized her Gift, and began training her in the ways of Sorcery. This idyllic life continued until the castle fell due to the treachery of a rival noble family. The men were all killed, and the women and children captured for servants, slaves, and worse.

Lyria's Aunt and mentor was killed by the villains and she was seperated from her family. Ultimately, she found herself captured along with the rest of the women and children. Luckily for her, the guards were lax and unaware of her sorcerous training. Her few spells server her well, allowing her to escape, stealing a sword in the process.

She spent the next several years on the run, living on the fringes of society, scraping together whatever sort of food or money she could, frequently stealing, sometimes with other criminals, sometimes alone.

Her long-term goals include revenge, finding a new mentor to continue her sorcerous training, improving her lot in life, and staying alive.

Great Job, Anya! A great character and only 3 lifepaths.

Wow, this looks like a great character Anya. Are you a fan of George R R Martin? :)

Thanks, guys!

Are you a fan of George R R Martin? :)

As it happens, I've read some of his SF work, but little or none of his Fantasy. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you're thinking of Game of Thrones? I have to admit to really liking Beauty and the Beast, which I think he worked on.

Has GRRM written characters similar to Lyria?

Yes, I've read all of his existing Song of Ice and Fire books, of which Game of Thrones is one. He has a character names Littlefinger, Who loves a Catelyn, who is mother to an Arya and has a husband who's dead sister's name was Lyanna. I noticed the similarities (Littlefingers, Kate, Anya and Lyria) and figured there might be a connection. I love these books and have emulated many of the characters myself in games, so it's not meant as a slight at all, just an observation by a fellow fan. :) I have yet to read his SF stuff.

Falgrim,

I know of Game of Thrones, but I actually haven't read it or any of GRRM's other fantasy books (although I may have read a short story here and there).

So, while it is pretty striking, the names are all sort of coincidental.

Anya the Blue is an old GURPS character whose name I use as a handle online sometimes. She bears some conceptual similarities with Lyria, above, in that she's got weak magic abilities and adequate swordswomanship. Lyria is a lot more 'emotionally troubled' than Anya ever was, though.

"Lightfingers" came from, well, either the old Fineous Fingers strip in the Dragon lo these many Aeons ago, or from the first Guardians of the Flame book (I think there was a thief named Einar Lightfingers, or something like that).

Kate I pulled mostly out of thin air (but also because I like Katherine Hepburn and Taming of the Shrew).

As for Lyria, well, I seem to use real names for my characters (witness Anya and Kate, for example) a lot more often than guys do , who all seem to end up with characters named Chak or Narph or something else nonsense-like. So I'm trying to branch out and think of fictionalized names for my characters, too. I'm not exactly bowled over by 'Lyria' as a name, and it'll probably change before I ever play her.

That's a pretty amusing coincidence, though, having four names seem to match up that closely. Maybe I'm telepathic? =)

Maybe. :) That's pretty cool actually. There all good names too, so nothings wrong with that. I like the idea for the character in any event.
