Hello

My Great Spider has the Wyrd Strands spell, but we are uncertain how its intended to work.

Its on page 177 of the Monster Burner. And it says "A web wyrd can control web strands as if they were his own limbs." - And continues to give the strands a Speed, Agility and declare that they can be used for martial actions.

This leaves me with questions though.

Is this spell mobile, like a set of snaking strands wrapped around my characters torso?

Or does the web it is cast upon have to be a classic Orb? - Does the orb then become mobile?

Lariat?

What Power does it strike with?

Can I use it to Lock people with Entanglement?

Can I use it to open doors and other hand replacement tasks?

Is it like a wire controlled construct walking around?

As it is, its quite useful regardless of being part of an Orb web or as a mobile set of hands. So, which one is the correct interpretation? - Or can it be used for both?

Its a Sustained spell so the Web Wyrd has to touch the string at all times.

It's a Presence origin spell, which means the Web affected must be in the spider's Presence (see Presence on p213 of BW and Positioning with Spells on p 222).

Essentially, the spider can control the Web so long as it is within its Will in paces from the Web. If it has a Will B4, it can manipulate the Web so long as it is within 4 paces of the Web.

It does not have to touch the Web (see Sustained Spells on p216 of BW). Sustained means the spider must dedicate one of its Will dice to maintaining the spell.

The Web Positions with Speed equal to the caster's Will + 1D for every success over the Obstacle of the spell. As written in the description, the caster may use the Web to perform all martial actions he knows using his own skills and Stats. It can be used to Strike using the caster's Brawling and Power, Lock using the caster's Power, Push using the caster's Power, etc.

It may be used as hands.

Can I add a quick question.

The web that the spell is cast on, does it have a fixed point of origen or can it move with the web wyrd?

An example:
The web wyrd spins a web in a cave, cast the spell into the web and then leaves the cave. Does the web walk with him out of there and into the nearby town, or does it stay there and go ineffective when he leaves it's presence.

Lets generalise this - all spells that do not explicitly state that the webs are on the spider himself (the web armour thing) - are they assumed to be stationary? Wyrd strands of course can reach out for people, but is part of the web fixed in position.

I don't see why a spider couldn't spin a strand and then cast the spell on it, perhaps lowering it down to form a noose around an unsuspecting neck.

The spell states that the Web can move according to the caster's desire. If the caster gets farther away from the Web than his Presence, however, the spell will dissipate.

Thank you for your replies, this clears up alot.

It also means this is a really, really, nice spell with many applications.
