The basic idea of this setting is going to be that it is set on earth, in about 100,000 years from now. Artificial intelligence and Nanotechonology were the height of human achievement, when a rebelious AI found a way to corrupt nanotechnology. Humanity was on the verge of creating life from scratch, in the form of intelligent nanotechnology already. It just took a little nudge in the wrong direction to set forth a wave of tiny computers that reproduced and seemed inteligent. The Nanites spread out rapidly developed a social order amungst them selves and several competing factions of Nanites began warring. Humanity was mostly ignored as they could rarley affect the Nanite Microverse.
At this point in the timeline (2012?) Nanites had bonded with sub molecular structures and are reducing their size and increasing their speed. eventually they spread over the known universe, existing everywhere, even existing in vacum. (Don't ask how they work. ha)
They function kind of like SkyNet from the "Terminator". thats right, they cause a world war to eliminate the human menace, killing the majority of us. after the Nanites reduce Earth to a mass of charred cinders, all is quiet on earth. eons go buy, flora and fauna change, tectonic plates shift and change, and the Manite menace evolves from billions of fractured struggling AI networks, into single minded energy brains.
Now since these beings were forged origanally on Earth by Humanity, they get all sentimental about things. Studying ancient lore of earth, they decide to emulate dieties and thusly create several pantheons, most of which are similar to ancient religions. Some of them begin to nurture earth and it's inhabitants. Some of them jealosly guard their chosen flock (dwarves), and others are left to there own devices for a time, always watched (Humanity). Some are Punished to War onward forever (Elves vs Orc).
So these nanites have acended to god-hood and are responsible for anything magical about this Earth.
And people of Earth finally have Gods/Goddesses. Most everybody is a loyal follower to some higher power.
accept the Sorcerous Societies, who are mostly athiests(and laughed at for it). They aren't buting it. They know secrets and there not tellling. although their motives are varied, one thing is for certain: They are no friends to any Shiva/Ra/Odin/etc. it's a wonder they are not destroyed with fires of hell.
