View Full Version : Luke paints minis
The Chris Moeller thread pointed me here: http://www.idratherbe.tv/irb/2007/10/the-war-painter.html
I would never have thought that Mr. Crane was a mini-paintin', Warhammer-playin' guy. Neat!
So, it leads me to the obvious, stupid question for Luke: Why no minis in the RPGs you design? Not that RPGs need minis; I'm just curious as to why/how BW ended up being a mini-less RPG.

Minis make it more difficult to deal with the abstract positioning system, we found. People take them too literally.

My favorite line is when Luke talks about making his orc's boots the color of the skin of Pete's dwarfs, "as if he killed Pete's dwarves and made boots out of their faces."

i'm sorry but the title of this thread just sounds like a really geeky taunt about on the order of, "your mother wears army boots!"

Lack of minis is one of the things I really appreciate about BW. They're cool if the game is all about them, but it really is too hard for most people (myself included) to play a detailed, visual war game and an abstract roleplaying game at the same time. IME, that's one of the great weaknesses of DnD 3.0 and 3.5. I remember combat being a lot more fun back in the days of ADnD when it was pretty much all in our heads.

Can anyone recommend some minis with really good flails? I need to get Luke a present.

Is that a furry bearing a flail with his back seductively turned toward me?
Rowr!

He wants you to "lift his loincloth" if you know what I mean.

All I see is a hadaka jime waiting to happen.

On someone with a flail? Bad idea! Bad idea!

Well, I suppose a kataha might answer then. Or he might just be surprised enough to drop the flail.
I didn't get that far, though. I just saw a back and thought hadaka jime. Reflex, you understand.

So the abstract positioning came first?
I hate minis.
But you love Warhammer?

Look, you know how, if you consider a mathematical line, it exists only in two dimensions, but if you wind it around enough, and stand back, it looks like a ball in three dimensions, and there are very real ways in which it can be considered to have a fractional dimensionality?
Well, it's like that with Luke and hatred. Sometimes, the incandescent wire of loathing is so tightly wound that it looks just like a warm fuzzy ball of love. But it's not. Oh, no.
But you love Warhammer?
No, he loathes it.
But you love Warhammer?
I assume you're referring to Warhammer Fantasy Battle. If that is the case, my answer is: I do not love it.
I have a special nostalgic love for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (1st Ed).

No, he loathes it.
Well, if he could just win once in a while...

Yet you are compelled to play?
You are indeed an incandescent wire.

The Enemy Within! :) The Greatest Campaign I Never Played. :(
A Mohawked Dwarf...what better way to get 15 year-old Ken to save his lunch money for weeks and pedal 3 miles to Brookhurst comics to part with his cash.
*sigh*
