View Full Version : Recorded BW sessions with Luke, Thor et al?

Spend any length of time on this forum reading up on how to run Burning Wheel and you'll encounter references to how things played out in sessions with Luke, Thor, and other at BWHQ. As a neophyte Burning Wheel GM I find these anecdotes extraordinarily useful, because they show how the game is "supposed" to work in a way that a core book can't always manage. This brings me to my question: are there any publicly-available recordings of sessions with the BWHQ team? If so, where? If not, to what address should I send the iRiver? ;)

Well that needs to change! C'mon, get the Sons of Kyros to record a session.
Or are you guys too shy? ;)

Watch Conan the Barbarian with the commentary track for an idea.

And then add lots of foul language and over-the-line jokes.

How about any other recordings of BW sessions, not necessarily of Luke, et al.? I found few recorded convention sessions on archive.org though the recording quality is pretty poor, with a lot of background noise. Also, the multi-hour files make me really wish they were in something like AAC format that would remember where I left off. So, are there any other recordings out there that people recommend, preferably good quality and with a group that spends more time playing than telling jokes and getting sidetracked on the cool-ranch vs. nacho-cheesier debate?

I've used excerpts from Burning Wheel and Burning Empires at Virtual Play (http://virtualplay.podbus.com/) as well as posting some complete games at the Internet Archive (although you may have listened to those already). There is a link at Virtual Play to the games I've posted at the archive. And I'm listening to 'Quest from the Holy Grail' now, from this past weekend's Dreamation convention so I will have that posted soon.

Cool. It occurs to me, of course, that if I want AAC files, I can always convert them myself, rather than whining about it. Also, I hope I didn't sound disparaging when I referred to "poor" recording quality, which I saw as a product of the setting, and not the technician.

No harm, no foul ;-)
I'm kicking myself because I did have a recording of Luke running 'the Sacrifice', but the file became corrupted exactly because the technician (me) doesn't know what the hell he's doing! I might be able to salvage some of it so if I do I'll let you know.

I added you to my Google Reader. By the way, did you end up posting anything from the Ubercon Holy Grail game? :) I'm curious to hear your analysis of that.
We could remedy that when Jeff and I visit if you want.
Some people hate having that shit recorded and I dig that.
We really don't record well.

I seem to remember a video recording of Luck discussing Burning Wheel. It may have been on Treasure Tables, about two years ago.. That video sold me on burning wheel.
Beyond that, go to a Con and play a game with him.. or any of us Con going Burning Wheel running crazies.

Because trying to keep the camera on the action would make look like NYPD Blue was shot with a fixed mount camera?
Too bad, I suspect it would help. Can you think of anyway to do a Family Friendly recreation of a gaming session? Sort of like how the examples are done but as a script and then acted out again.
Sure. I'll link to it on the wiki if anyone comes up with anything.

Dro isn't well enough trained to be taken out in public yet.

Someone did a great video for explaining circles tests (http://youtube.com/watch?v=FjdxCVaJhbk).
Jason Morningstar did a very useful Demonstration (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlLLqdXW3ok&feature=related) of his game Grey Ranks on Youtube. From it I was able to really grok the system, as I tend to be a visual and auditory learner.
I also remember learning how to use the D20 system from something similar on the Wizards of the Coast website.
I think it would certainly be a fun project for one of us avid BW'ers to undertake. I'd love to see something like Range and Cover, or Fight! explained to me via instructional video. Especially positioning tests.
Yes! ChrisG rules! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=FjdxCVaJhbk)

Vertiginous Goblin Taven? I laughed, I cried, I bought another set of BWR books! That's a pretty good job on the video.

Oh.... Chris' video doth rocketh and ith quite inspirith.
We should get Sean and make some instructionals! I think I could get out of the house if I had that excuse! Or... we could do it in my place!
Koga and Kazu will be our official spokespersons.
