Fantastic. "BE is the John Cage of RPGs" :)
I especially liked the bit about the “sharp kick to the back of the head.”
I've always eaten peanut butter! I tried chocolate and it didn't taste like peanut butter, therefore it is a failed food. I will continue to eat minute variations of peanut butter until it explodes from my eyeballs.

I like BE's approach to play it as written. I like that it's a game, as well as role playing. Yet it's not everyone's cup of tea. I would go further into it, but who likes rants anyways? :)
Apparently I do :D

isn't that kinda high falutin' for a game?
LOL! How appropriate that you give the haters a backwater voice. :D

hahahah Nice. Don't get me wrong, I had a post as long as yours written up when I just decided to delete it and add that bit in. A bit too tired to man the rant turret tonight.
But I'm glad someone manned it, and scored a some good hits as well! ;)

I love how rpg.net rehashes the same threads every three to six months.

Didn't you get the memo? The internet: serious business!
The thread has been so calm. Ah, rpg.net of yore, I miss thee.

I finally had to post, too--though I avoid TT Open like the plague, usually (all I need from RPG.net, I get in Reviews and LARP Open). What finally motivated me to post is that no one was actually really answering the OP, aside from saying, "Because I like it!" versus "No idea; I hated it!"
So I decided to talk a bit about how you guys really support the product and obviously are providing a fine book, in spite of being small press. Of course, being a rational response to the OP, it was thoroughly ignored.
My favorite are the folks who are, like, "I flipped through it and didn't like it." Wow, really? Good to know: send me a picture of you saying that and I'll get a poster made at Kinko's! I mean, seriously... of what possible use is such a throw-away statement, even presuming the OP really wants advice or replies (as opposed to asking a rhetorical question just to rabble-rouse).
Oh, well... there's no such thing as bad publicity--in fact, I think two or three folks in that thread expressed an interest in getting a copy of BW/BE! Don't think of it as losing a customer; think of it as gaining three customers....

Did I win? I won, didn't I? What did I get?
In related news, I went to a restaurant the other day that was recommended to me by complete strangers on a discussion board. I really like Mexican, but this place served up Thai or some shit. No melted cheese? No refried beans? I want a refund.

Well, at least both foods were spicy, or did the also fail to provide the spicyness? What self-respecting Mexican place wouldn't have spicy dishes!

Sweet. Now I can buy an oversized burrito.
Well, it looks like BE ended up getting a lot of love in that thread.
What really left me scratching my head was the post counts: 7 by the guy who started the thread, and, like, 18 by some other tool with grievances to air. Maybe I'm being naive, but I think it's weird that people would sign up and pretty much come out swinging.

Yeah I really don't get that. What's wrong with the writing style? Its a bit more personal than most RPG books, but let's face it the writing in most RPG books is about as dry as a desert nomad's ass.

Everyone knows that Luke's writing style is offensive because there's only one way to play RPGs. Luke plays the wrong way and when he says you should play his game a certain way, he's trying to make you play the wrong way too, which ruins every game everywhere*.
Come on guys, get with the program.
*I'm glossing over a lot of technical detail here, but basically what happens is that Luke says that there are rules that a GM should follow to make the game better for everyone, and that statement actually physically castrates the RPGPundit, and since the RPGPundit's testicles emit rays which empower gaming everywhere, and they can't emit those rays without blood flow, that ruins games. Incidentally, this is also why games are better in precise relation to their distance from Uruguay.

I like that edit better ;)
In all seriousness, you did manage to write what I was thinking on the matter much better than I could have. :)

Sweet. So Misery Rex, at 21 posts, appears to be another in the army of "Burning Wheel is what's wrong with roleplaying, and Luke Crane is ruining the hobby" players.
Every time someone gets this defensive about entrenched play style, I have to think something's up. One of those "thou doth protest too much" things, I guess.

crazy, isn't it?
you think the people who play chess got pissed when checkers came out?
art house movies ruin CGI action movies?
computer games ruin board games?

The really funny part for me is that they complain about the sanctimonious writing style and Revised BW and BE is far less heavy handed than BW Classic. LOL!
I think I’ll get some popcorn. This is going to be good.

Although Misery is saying some positive things about the game saying that it's a well-oiled and beautiful machine. Some of it may seem displaced but I am willing to concede those elements even if they are veiled insults. :)

what's stupid about this is if the guy had picked up 3rd edition Dnd, read it in a week or so, and then declared, "It's too complicated! I want my money back!" the whole figgin' RPGnet would have laughed his ass off the boards
It took my five hard core nerds about three years of playing and arguing before we really felt like 3rd edition was second nature
see Luke, you and Chris shoulda made Iron Empires d20, than everyone could have grokked it sooner...:rolleyes::rolleyes:
